Dominating with a Few Kinks
This is such a great time of year. Football is officially in full swing with the arrival of Week One of the NFL. It gets even more exciting when you know your favorite team has a legitimate shot at Super Bowl glory. Such is the case with the fans for the team deep in the heart of Texas.
The Dallas Cowboys truly dominated the Cleveland Browns yesterday. The 28-10 beating really could have been a 42-3 shellacking had Romo not thrown an interception in the end zone, Dallas sitting on the ball to finish the game (a classy move by the way), and the defense lapsing into stupid penalties and blowing other 3rd down opportunities on the Browns 9:00 drive. As well as Dallas played, it could have been worse for Cleveland.
The Browns looked to still be in training camp. Even though Dallas out-penalized them 7-0 in the first half, there was a lot of poorly executed plays, dropped passes, a non-existent pass rush, and missed tackles. Despite all of this, the game didn’t get out of hand until the Cowboys scored right before halftime. That was a pretty raucous crowd there in Cleveland – Cowboy fans expected nothing less. The Dawg Pound is not the easiest venue to play in as an opponent. The Browns have an outstanding fan base.
My likes and dislikes from Week One in Cleveland:
Dallas’ offensive line was devastating! That is where the game was really won. Despite the once a game false start by Flozell Adams, and other penalties, the Cowboys ran for over 160 yards. They amassed over 37 minutes of time of possession. Romo had all day to throw also.
Felix Jones and Tashard Choice each had very positive debuts running the ball. I did not know that Felix Jones scored that touchdown until he was already in the end zone. I was wondering where Marion Barber got all that speed all of a sudden. Felix’s touchdown was the play that got me geeked. It would have been nice to see him break that 23-yard run later in the ballgame.
If Dallas has a deficiency in kick and punt coverage, I didn’t see it in this game. We fans will have to accept the good coverage performances one at a time until we start to see sustained superior performance in this area of play.
Despite only one sack by Ware, the play of the defensive line still played a little above average. The Cowboys only gave up 205 total yards (much thanks to over 37 minutes time of possession by the offense). Cleveland was only 3 of 9 in 3rd down conversions, and they only averaged 4.8 yards per offensive play (Dallas was 7.7). Getting Anthony Spencer and Terrance Newman back soon will help bolster the defense.
Penalties, penalties, penalties! I don’t expect perfection, but this really needs to get minimized. The only flaw to Flozell Adams’ game is his once-a-game false start. I will be more than happy to accept that as long as he continues to dominate the way he does though.
Did you think Adam Jones really needed to tackle Braylon Edwards in the end zone? I didn’t think Edwards had much of a shot to catch that pass anyways.
And how does Scandrick manage to get a hands to the face penalty when he is so short he can practically play handball on the curb?
Owens two penalties irritated me the most. The first was his own selfish stupidity in the end zone. The second one was totally BS!
Romo has got to stop being so careless down by the goal line. That play irritated me the most. Throw the @^$#^&**& ball through the uprights! Live for another play! Regardless, he had a great game. His touchdown pass to Owens was a thing of beauty. It was a perfect spiral that hit him in stride.
All in all, it was a great opening-day win for the Cowboys. It was probably the most dominating performance on opening day since trashing the Steelers in Three Rivers Stadium in 1997. The other dominating opening-day wins were in 1995, 1994, 1992, 1985, 1978, 1974, 1972, 1969, 1968, and 1966.
The Cowboys are now 33-15-1 (.684 pct) on Opening Day!
