Had to work today so I didn't get to watch the game live... I used to hide myself from all contact and watch Cowboys games without knowing the result... yeah I won't be doing that anymore. Anyways: here's my take on the game.
Defense:
- thought it was Ponder's best performance of the year despite our atrocious pass defense this season. I wouldn't say defensively we were horrible today at all. We were below average, but gamey. Our players play hard- we just lack playmakers in the starting lineup.
-I think we were caught off guard with the no-huddle offense and played a bit too conservative on D. Thought Wynn, Selvie and Everett Brown were very solid. Webb wasn't the worst slot CB I've ever seen either.
-Sims was terrible and should not be playing as much as he is in this scheme vs. Bruce Carter. He overruns too many plays and then freezes when he realizes a play is coming right at him. On the Ponder scramble he had a perfect opportunity to clean his clock and just stopped not realizing the LOS was breached. He had a similar moment on one of Peterson's runs- he expects collisions someplace other than where they will occur.
- I like Jeff Heath as a prospect. Not a lot of mental errors and he definitely isn't afraid to get in the mix. He lacks a bit of physicality and will benefit from off-season strength training.
- Barry Church is a very sound tackler. He's a solid player too but just not a difference maker in coverage.
-Scandrick played very very well today, and I thought Carr had a nice outing too. Orlando is a bit of an enigma as he seems to fail once a year on a game deciding play but today he was probably the overall best defensive player on the field.
Overall I'd like to say I think the D is a tad underrated and will benefit from a return of some talent if Demarcus can ever get right. I know the statistics are mindblowing but they compete and take the ball away at a pretty good clip. I like the Run D in totality, but they had a few missteps today vs the best in the game for sure. Still, Peterson had a nice game but he did NOT dominate the game as I've seen him do to other defenses.
Offense:
- I'd like to start off by saying that I really don't care for the entire look and feel of our scheme- until it's "must go" time. It's too much back foot throws to underneath receivers and sideline throws instead of attacking the middle of the defense as we do when we are in "must score" mode. Without getting into all the intricacies of are we balanced (we're not). Our receivers are a bit flat footed in their routes and rarely get momentum to break tackles or pile up RAC.
- Murray has to play more than he did today if we're going to do anything this season. He ran well and then was forgotten, but he's a nice weapon out of the backfield regardless. Just don't care for Randle. And Dunbar is a talented kid but he's just not right for this scheme because he can't pass protect at all.
- Both outside WR's: had very poor games. Dez was terrible but did redeem himself with a nice catch and run late. Dez's hands are not quite as advertised in total honesty. He's dropped way too many balls this season to be considered a top 5 WR. He's the second most dangerous WR in the NFL, but he's not the 2nd Best WR. He has work to do. TWill. If you're going to be open a lot (which he is) you have to catch the ball when thrown to you, I think he hears footsteps a little bit, and that's not good when you're a body catcher like he is.
-Beasley was terrific. He had one drop but man was he a difference maker today.
-Romo was fine overall but at the mercy of the poor play of his pass catchers today. They finally made some plays for him. If not for the int late in the 4th Qtr I'd say he played a solid A game today. At least he didn't fold when given the second chance this time around: and I'll say this- I think that drive saved our season, or at least bought it time.
-Bernedeau was fine today in substitution for Brian Waters. He played solidly, I felt Leary had a rougher outing.
-I felt the officiating was ok- but a bit one sided again in favor of the Vikes (the 2 offensive PI's and the defensive holding vs Scandrick were horrible calls. Witten's was callable but even that was a reach. I wonder if Dez's *****ing sent it south for us. We did benefit from the biggest break of the game which was the lateral that was called incomplete. Terrible call. I think the official on that sideline was caught napping a bit.
ST's kick coverage still needs some work.
Garrett is a horrific coach but for some reason his players play like professionals for him with effort. I will give him that.
That's all I have for now.
