Finding the balance

In year's past, we've made bold moves for players like Roy Williams from the University of Texas. While I don't think Roy is a bad player by any stretch, we did give up too much for Roy out of what seemed like a knee-jerk need to fill a skill position.

Usually we have fans telling us that we spent to much on player X. While we need to cut spending and reserve it for a more balanced team.

We have not always been balanced and seem to have lack of depth in one area or another. Bill Parcells said the easiest position to hide is at free safety. We ended up with players like Keith Davis, who went on to play with the Saints.

While he wasn't spectacular, he did man a position on one of the best defenses in the league that year.

On to my point to which I'm getting, since this isn't an article or anything, is that during preseason every year we hear the doomsday crowd we are spending too much or we're not spending enough.

There seems to always be the alarmists on both sides of the fence, soapboxing how it ought to be done by not signing this player or by breaking the bank for their favorite non-cowboy hero. So one consistent thing is there are always lips jabbering about what ought to be.

That never changes the fact that one thing stays the same. Some fans will never stop and wait a day or two for something that makes the team better in 2 years.

It doesn't make sense, to a lot of our fans, to slow brew a good team in today's age of high speed information sharing.

Sometimes even I get caught up thinking all moves must be made for a Super Bowl run this year.

Then I just thought to myself, that's been the problem all along, finding the balance between a solid team with good players throughout and a team riddled with players we're forced to hide behind defensive schematics that usually don't work.

I've noticed a few good teams throughout my life who didn't have many stars at all on their team, yet they seemed to find the way to win.

Right now, it's not about balancing a need for this year. It's about forming a balanced team that can achieve winning 2, 3 or 4 years in an eras time.

I've been guilty of reacting as other fans do, but from now on as long as I think we're building for the future, I'll be happy.

And that doesn't mean I can't root for us to win this year either.
