Wasn't "finishing" the theme for this year's Cowboys team in training camp?
Well, it's December and the entire team seemed to lose its understanding of the concept against Pittsburgh.
The defense turned in a performance for the ages, yet gave up 10 points in the final 9 or so minutes. It's like a quarterback throwing for 379 and four touchdowns, but throwing his only interception with 1:49 left to lose 38-37. It was a great performance. But we didn't finish.
On special teams, perhaps as expected, we gave up a big punt return, had a horrible 25-yard punt and had two crappy kickoff returns all in the final quarter. We didn't finish there, either.
And, of course, on offense -- where we hardly even got started -- we squandered an opportunity to put this win away like we did the Washington game when we got the ball at the 40-yard line following Pittsburgh's kick that went out of bounds. Instead, we were quickly forced to punt. Later, we had a chance to drive for the winning score. Instead, Romo is picked off. And even later, we have a chance to pull a last-second comeback for the tie, and we're off the field in, what, five plays? We didn't finish.
This has been a problem for this team for some time in December and on, and it looks to continue to be.
(Note: I feel obligated to provide the disclaimer that this is not a thread to absolve Romo. He had a horrid game; one of his worst as a Cowboy, and looks poised for another late-season swoon. We'll never turn it around until he ups his play this time of year. So with that out of the way...)
