WILSON LANDS WITH FINS

Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 8:37 a.m.

At a time when we here at PFT are looking for a few good hamsters to power the servers, the Dolphins have landed a Gibril to enhance the defense.

Free-agent safety Gibril Wilson, a member of the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII championship team who was cut by the Raiders less than a year after signing a big-money deal, has agreed to terms with the Fins, according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

The addition of Wilson gives Miami some protection against the fact that both starting safeties from 2008, Renaldo Hill and Yeremiah Bell, will become unrestricted free agents at midnight.

That's fine.

He's not a bad player, but this keeps Miami away from some of the safety prospects in April which is preferable.

Now if New Orleans would just sign Sharper quickly, that will be another down.

I agree. My first thought upon seeing this is that it pushes Delmas, Chung, and Johnson down in the Draft. I still think Sean Smith is going in round 1.

Yep. He's not an All Pro, but for them he's a much needed upgrade who puts up numbers every year.

I was hoping we would show some interest in him. Not that he's great or anything, but I am not sold that a rookie Safety who comes in can play right away. And we hear again and again that Wade doesn't like playing rookies right away (I know the CB's played last season, but it was due to injury).

But like you guys said it takes them out of the Safety race in the draft hopefully.

I have a feeling we better get used to being disappointed in free agency. Jones has been pretty clear that they intend to stay away from big signings. I don't expect much, if anything. It appears he really might stick to his "continuity" theme and that includes securing our returning talent first no matter who they are(Hurd and Proctor are prime examples).

I want to stay away from the big signings. The only player I would have been interested in at all is Peppers and Carolina took care of that.

This was my thought exactly. He's a good player for them and this will keep them from feeling the need to get one of the guys we're going to need.

I also, as I've said, wouldn't mind if this move allows them to believe they are able to give up their 2nd rounder for a certain WR on this Cowboys roster.

I don't get people with this guy. He's had two teams practically tell him to piss off, and he gets signed as a backup on a team that needs a starting safety, not a backup.

This guy is terrible. If we'd signed him, and he'd actually played through 6 games in '09, people would be screaming that Jerry's a moron.

One thing that I've been thinking of concerning the Safety position for us is that do we still draft a Safety high IF we re-structure and keep R Williams?

Of course, we clearly need better play at the Safety position regardless of what we do with Roy Williams.

But maybe we aim for Safety in Round 3 or 4 instead of Round 2. For example, Brouton (sp? - think that's his name) the Safety coming out from Notre Dame? He could be had in Round 3 quite possibly.

well they probably are going to need 2 safeties

not us

it was better for Miami to sign him

DETAILS ON THE GIBRIL DEAL

Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 10:52 a.m.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that safety Gibril Wilson’s new deal with the Dolphins covers five years.

Wilson receives $8 million guaranteed, and $16.5 million over the first three years.

So, bascially, Wilson has pocketed two free-agent paydays in less than a year.

Wilson was cut recently by the Raiders. He signed in Oakland last year after winning a Super Bowl with the Giants.

The Giants didn't tell him to piss off. They paid 1.3 million 2nd rounder tender to keep him as a RFA. They weren't willing to franchise him as a UFA, but were wanting to resign him until Al Davis offered him an absolutely ridiculous over-market contract. Then after one year Al Davis awakens with a hangover from his drunken spending spree from last offseason and has to cut payroll, and releases Gibril. Parcells/Ireland benefit from Al Davis' irrational antics by getting a 27 year old who led NFL safeties in tackles last season and has 6 INT's in his last two years at a discount. Just like they benefited from another egomanical owner/GM's irrational antics last offseason.

I guess we should be happy.

We basically told Proctor, Hurd and Bowen to piss off a year from now. Excellent.

The Dolphins reportedly were considering at one point earlier this month the possibility of using the franchise tag on tackle Vernon Carey, linebacker Channing Crowder, and safety Yeremiah Bell.

In the end, they used it on none of them.

In the end, they didn’t need to; all have signed long-term deals.

The last of the trio to agree to terms was Bell. Per a league source, it’s a four-year, $20 million deal, with $10 million guaranteed.

Bell will play strong safety this year for the Fins; newly-signed Gibril Wilson will play free safety.

Hmm looks like the fins are out of the Sean Smith sweepstake yippee!

I'd take Haynesworth but that's not happening in Dallas so I don't have the hots for anyone in FA.

(Good thing since I'm male) :)
