First ever double hurricane could hit the Gulf of Mexico

Next week for the first time on record, two hurricanes could hit the Gulf of Mexico at the same time.

Twice before, in 1959 and 1933, two tropical storms have entered the Gulf at the same time. But never before have both been hurricanes.

It might not go that way. Only one of the storm systems has yet strengthened into a tropical storm — a dangerous cyclone, but not yet a hurricane. The other remains a tropical depression, and its future is still unclear. But forecast models have suggested the possibility since at least Thursday (Aug. 20), and the storms are still following the path that would lead to double Gulf hurricanes.

Could be a wild week in the Gulf.
:omg:

Two side notes
  • I wish they would not say "1st ever" in their headlines. Maybe 1st on "record"--which doesn't really go back all that far relatively speaking.
  • Also, if anyone cares for trivia, there were two hurricanes that hit the US at the same time back in the 30s. But one hit on the other side of Florida instead of officially the Gulf.

And the overlap patterns have the Houston area and a little to the West, down Rockport's way, right in the sweet spot.

They are staggered but not by enough if that ground is saturated. And Houston has actually created more concrete surfaces since that last disaster. What don't they get? Only one place for water to go when it can't go down.
