First Official Depth Chart

I can't blame you.

Whatever problems the guy might have, he's making it clear that his football career isn't that important to him.

Just another Martellus Bennett. All the talent you need to be successful and a 10 cent brain.

That's the first look, keep that and let's compare to the opening day chart, think we'll see some changes. And I also think we will see some throughout the season.

I wouldn't put too much where the young players are right now because some position coaches want them to "fight for it". Don't give them anything, make them take it. I expected more out of Charleton last season and he's still backing up but there will be a healthy rotation if Gregory can play. And I could see some DL lineups with 3 DE's, maybe all 4 at times.

I am still concerned about those DT and Safety positions and Jaylon has to be 100% to play that MLB position because his struggle last season, lateral movement and quickness, really held him back from what he once was and hopefully, can be again.

One thing that is not on that depth chart that I believe will be a difference maker, the position coaches. They've got some guys with something to prove and there are two that could really boost their stock, DB's and WR's. Not to mention that the QB coach is one that was always destined to be a coach.

And let's not forget one OC with his butt hanging over an open flame and all eyes fixed on him. He's got a QB that regressed the last half of his soph season, no clear #1 WR or TE. I have never been a Linehan fan but if he pulls this one off, I am taking back half the bad things I wrote about him.

You expected a raw 1st round pick to do better than he did? He lacks the explosion and polish to do better than 3-5 sacks as a rookie and that's exactly what we got. If we get 13-15 sacks out of the RDE position this year, I'm calling it a win.

IMO the depth chart in the preseason should read.

All positions to be determined!

Yeah but at least Bennett carved out a career for himself and made some money for several years.

This guy just flunked the biggest test of his life. Didn't even show up to take that test.

Some of your comments seem to treat this depth chart as if it is set for the start of the season, and others seem to treat it as preliminary and subject to change. Of course I know you realize that some of the numbers will have to be trimmed off.

It's all a reaction to the "first official depth chart", not forecasting the future.

I was just finding it hard to comment. For example, your comment on LVE was that it was that it is strange for a 1st round pick to start the season as a backup. Of course, that's only the case if the assumption is the depth chart as it stands now reflects the starters in game one. Your comment about Rico being listed above Schultz and Wells also seemed to indicate that was significant. On the other hand, your comment about Tavon not being on the depth chart as a returner includes the additional comment that you assume that will change.

Not a big deal, but it just seemed the comments about different positions varied as to whether they were based on the idea the depth chart is set on a position or may change. I personally would say that there are certain positions that are set, and for the most part we can agree on that. The O-Line, QB, RB, one DE and a few more. But any of the positions in which there may be some competition (WR, TE, back up RB etc) the depth chart very well could change.

LVE, I actually do think, will start the season as a "backup".

Rico over Schultz is only significant if you believe Rico should be flipping burgers rather than playing football.

Comment about Tavon suggests it'll change because the staff has said it will, but it also suggests that we won't see him return until the season starts.

So sure, my comments are a mixture of things but only because the context is different for different players. Even still, it's all couched in the fact that it's a depth chart put out before anyone has really done anything.

I suspect LVE will start when we have 3 TEs on the field, but may come off the field when we sub in an extra DB. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

As for Rico, I don't think it's necessarily all that significant that he is above Schultz on the depth chart whether anyone thinks he should be flipping burgers or not. I think that depth chart is fluid, at least on some positions, and I think TE is easily one of them. In the end, we don't know if the team really thinks Rico is a better option than Schultz or if he is only ahead of Schultz based on seniority and having more experience with what the Cowboys do on offense. I certainly don't see them cutting Schultz unless he really stinks up TC and preseason, which I doubt. This will be another interesting position to watch.

To be clear, I don't care if he starts or not. As I said, they'll find ways to get him on the field. I already think he's better in coverage than Jaylon, so there'll be opportunities for him to get some play time.

Regarding Rico, I'm tired of arguing about him. I think all the things to say about that situation have already been said, and we're all just regurgitating it over and over again at this point. He's a Cowboy and I'll root for him until he's not, same with the other TE's.

Fair enough on Rico. The comment about Jaylon and LVE in coverage is interesting though. You may be right that LVE is better in coverage, but before Jaylon's injury he was considered to be exceptional in coverage. A lot may depend on how Jaylon's recovery is going. Last year I thought Jaylon's lateral movement was a little limited, but I thought that got better as the season went on, and from what I've read he is better now.

Yep, I expected more from a 1st round DE just like I expect quite a bit from Vander Esch, what I didn't expect was to get that season out of Lawrence.

Back in the day, I would not have expected much from a rookie, except RB. But in today's NFL, 1st and 2nd rounders are expected to have impact in their rookie seasons. And Charleton was a need pick, just like Vander Esch is. Williams is expected to have impact as well and Gallup. The learning curve, even for QB's, is considerably shorter now.

Jaylon covered WR's 30 yards down the field at ND. LVE in coverage on RB's could be a problem for a QB with his height at 6'4" and wingspan.

When I watched film on both of these players, they have something in common. Without scale to give you a measure for their size, they are deceptively athletic. LVE does not move like a man his size.

And, of course, Lee is also good in coverage. That should be a significant strength with the LBs we have.
