In re-watching the HOF game, I noticed that the first pass that the cowboys ran was an Air-Coryell staple. The cowboys have run it numerous times, but I found it symbolic because it was run out of 12 personnel.
I couldn't tell you what the Cowboys currently call the formation the closest would be what in Tuner's offense is "Twins". So the play is Twins Right, scat right, 525 F Post. Scat right is the protection, this tells the running-back he has a check release off the Will backer or any outside pressure. Many are familiar with the route tree so 525 tells the outside receivers to run comebacks "5" route, while the tight end (Escobar) runs a crossing pattern (a two route is a drag type route for the tight end, not a slant) Rosario runs the "F Post", which depending on the leverage of the linebacker will angle in, this was the case on this play. Orton takes a 5-step drop and throws it to his first read, the "F Post".
I find it fascinating that there is proof that we are still running Air-Coryell, however it is in 12 personnel the majority of the time. When this was run in the 90s, it utilized Daryl Johnston as the "F Post", or even Jay Novacek in a "12" look. It is what we have all expected, same overall scheme with some more prominently used wrinkles.
