I missed most of the game live, so I just finished watching the dvr of it. As good as the offense was in the first half, I thought the defense set a great tone on the Colts opening series.
First down run, and Tyrone Crawford channeled his inner Aaron Donald and blew by the Colts center (granted, it was backup center Khaled Holmes, but hey...) for a five yard loss.
Second down, Hayden held his ground against a double team (Hallelujah!) and Hitchens beat the right guard to the hole for the tackle, one yard gain. Then the Colts followed it up with a give-up run on third down.
They followed it up the second series with two more Hitchens tackles. On the first, he sloughed off a WR block and closed fast on the receiver on a little flare pass for a five yard gain, on a play that was otherwise well blocked and probably would have been a first down. One second down he made a nice quick read and shot a gap for a minimal gain. Then Carr had his pass defense on third down and it was another punt.
Hitchens looked really quick and instinctive and decisive on both those series. The next time the defense took the field, it was already 21-0 and the Colts were one-dimensional for the rest of the game.
