I don't know the actual amount that they are willing to pay, but if you look at their contracts to outside free agents, it is true.Is this true or just speculation. Just curious.
This year, Erik Kendricks was our top paid outside free agent (this does not include players we traded for because Dallas takes on their salary). His cap hit is $2.97 million.
In 2023, our top outside FA was Chuma Edoga at $1,092,500, although I guess you could count Dante Fowler ($3 million) but he technically re-signed with us. (We pay more once you become one of us.) We did trade for Stephon Gilmore ($9.98 million) and Brandin Cooks ($6 million) but again, this is strictly outside FA signings. (The Joneses have shown the best chance of them paying for an expensive player not already on the team is through a trade.)
In 2022, Fowler signed with us for $2.91 million, which was the highest amount that year for an outside FA. Anthony Barr was next at $1.91 million.
In 2021, Greg Zuerlein was the top at $2.81 million in the second year of a three-year, $7.5 million deal, followed by Tarell Basham making $2.5 million in the first year of a two-year deal. (Looks like Basham was set to make $3 million in 2022, but we cut him that November.)
That's all the research I'm willing to do, but the pattern is pretty clear. The amount may go up over $3 million this year because of cap inflation, but I'll be surprised if it is much more than that.
