IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) – A skillion quickie impressions from the Dallas Cowboys’ work at OTAs at Valley Ranch:

*Tony Romo isn’t Peyton Manning. But being sidelined by the cyst-removal surgery didn’t prevent him from light sideline throwing or from counseling teammates. He was especially demonstrative in instructing Dez Bryant how to simulate the footwork needed to pretend he’s running against press coverage during route-running practice.

*Mo Claiborne reports that he’s gained six pounds of muscle — helpful for a cornerback trying to survive in the Tampa-2 scheme.

*New linebacker Justin Durant is expected to win the strong-side job. But he didn’t win it on Tuesday. He didn’t fully participate, instead working out on the side while wearing a thick hoodie sweatshirt under his jersey. While Durant sweated out some water weight, Alex Albright and Ernie Sims took some first-team snaps.

*Kyle Orton did not throw the ball very accurately on Tuesday. It would be helpful if the veteran would ramp it up.

*Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin told me that the “3-tech” and the “1-tech” decision “doesn’t matter.” Monte is, of course, playing dumb. The 3-Tech job winner has a chance to be a star; the 1-Tech guy is a plugger. On Tuesday, Jay Ratliff played the 3, Jason Hatcher the 1.

No, Mike.

This is not Zimmer's Cover 2 scheme.

Much different.

Is Nick Fairley a 'plugger' in Detroit?

That's right.
I thought the 1T and 3T were at least partially interchangeable in Kiffin's scheme.

Booger McFarland rather was in Tampa as compared to Warren Sapp.

I think you both have points. Suh can be a plugger; he just happens to be a man-beast.

On Hatcher over Rat for "plugger" I'm wondering if its because Rat is still tender or recovering and not 100% or if they are trying to preserve the ole Rat??

Glen Rice had small hands. He turned out okay.

Kiffen's Tampa 2 D does not have a "plugger". Both guys are expected to make plays.

In Kiffin's scheme he'll want the 3-tech to be the star player. That's where Fisher got it right. It's just that this is not your normal 1-tech spot.

It's a bit like the ole basketball theory of getting the 5 best players on the court at one time instead of finding the 5 best at their position. Here Kiffin will go with the 4 best pass rushers he can find instead of adhering strictly to the 'rules' of one player being the prototype for a 3-tech and one being a 'prototype' 1-tech. That's what Detroit did in drafting Fairley after having Suh. Neither is a prototype 1-tech, but their philosophy on defense is to get after the QB, so neither Fairley or Suh really have to worry about being a plugger.

Kiffin isn't being facetious. He really means it.

Troy Aikman was known to have small hands. Thats why he had trouble throwing well in wet weather.

There will be times one or both tackles will play a gap and hold as well as some heads up rather than grabbing the gap. The majority of the time they will grab the gap. There will be enough stunting and blitzing etc to fuzzy up the picture as well. I am a little worried about being soft against the run up the middle but it should be less than last year. Lee is going to make his share of tackles this year.

Encouraging to read that Matt Johnson and Wilcox are having good showings in practice displaying their athleticism.

Never sure why some feel the need to rebut every supposed slight.

Garrett was the one who told Fish Williams' hands were small.

What concerns me most is a twenty-something year sports writer who thinks it's road grater.

Is the road made of cheese? Are we having tacos?

We're not going to be running the under front with the Tampa 2 behind it on every down. What I am interested to see is what adjustments they will make on the front as the offense changes formation.

From what I understand, they don't substitute much, whereas Ryan's defenses looked like a hockey team.
