OAK BLUFFS, Mass. -- It wasn't too little, but it was too late.

Fishermen who hauled in a massive 1,100 pound tiger shark off Massachusetts this past weekend failed to capture first place in the monster shark derby on Martha's Vineyard.

The reason: The boat was six minutes too late in returning to Oak Bluffs harbor with its catch.

The toothy tiger shark may not have won the competition, but it did win the admiration of other fishermen. Steven James of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club said this truly was a monster shark, and one that "could eat you."

I don't claim to be a marine biology expert, but I don't ever remember seeing a tiger shark even half as big as that sucker.

Pretty crappy photography, makes scale next to impossible, but tigers can get 17 feet long and over 2,000 pounds.

They did not give the length and this one weighed 1,100, so they can be a lot bigger.

Seems like a completely cruel and unnecessary contest, since so many shark species are in danger.
