Years ago, when he started headlining movies, I started asking people, "How in the world did this guy ever get past his first audition, much less become a leading man ... a star." It made no sense. A little checking into whom he is related cleared it all up.

For you Seymour Hoffman marks check out this trailer to his new movie, Synecdoche, New York.

It's being directed by Charlie Kaufman (Screen writer of Eternal Sunshine - one of my favorites) in his directorial debut.

It looks like a winner.

I just watched Empire of the Sun for the first time (released in 1987) and it stars a 13 year old Christian Bale, who was absolutely fantastic in it.

Anyway, thought he deserves to be on the list:

Christian Bale

1) Batman Begins (Haven't seen Dark Knight yet, but I'm sure it merits mention here)
2) The Prestige
3) Empire of the Sun
4) Rescue Dawn
5) American Psycho

Dustin Hoffman is a great pick. I wouldn't put Meet the Fockers as one of his 5 movies though. Finding Neverland, Straw Dogs, Stranger than Fiction, Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Death of a Salesman, the guy just has such a great body of work.

Be sure to check out The Machinist if you haven't already. No-one can say that Bale doesn't prepare for his roles.

When I think of Tommy Lee Jones, I always think of Lonesome Dove, The Fugitive and U.S. Marshals, but I think his best work might have been The Good Ol' Boys. Great movie.

Viggo Mortenson (I suspect that his best is yet to come)

He was great in Appaloosa. Loved that character.
