1. Muhammad Ali - Good fighter but no where near the "Greatest". The start of the style over substance decline that plagues modern sports.

2. The Beatles - Mediocre vocal talent combined with poor musicianship leads to the end all be all of music?

3. Caviar - Scary that some people actually claim to like it to prove their culture and class.

4. Modern art - $2 million for a $2 painting thanks to whose name is on it? Check out the story of D.S Windle for the pompousity of "art".

5. Ernest Hemingway - I cannot stand his writing. It drives me insane.

I agree with #3 and #4, but not the other 3.

I love Hemingway's writing. The Sun Also Rises is my favorite.

As an aside I worked at a large apartment complex here about 10 years ago and the Maintenance Supervisor there regularly said sex was the most over rated thing in the world. I always found that funny.

Hemingway had great ideas behind his stories but his writing style is enough to drive a man to drink.

Modern art is awesome. When done well it is the kind of thing that sticks with you for years. You are hating on it because you don't understand it.

Ali is not overrated at all. He is not only revered in the US, but around the world. Besides Tiger and MJ he is still probably the most recognizable sports figure in the world. Not only was he a great fighter, but his social revelance cannot be understated.

Great job with the impression of that set. Reading that had visions of the idiot dealer who keeps trying to get me to invest in that crap running through my head.

He was a good fighter whose shameless self promotion elevated his status.

Art should not be good because you can or can not understand what the artist was trying to do or say.

It is only good if you like it and find some kind of enjoyment from it.

Sadly some, not all, people buy some of it because of it's monetary value to boost their ego and social status and not because they enjoy the painting itself.

Eye of the beholder situation I guess.

People were interested in him and what he had to say. ABC Wide World of Sports basically lived off him for awhile. Was he a self promoter? Sure, but the difference with Ali is that beyond the flash he had substance.

He beat Foreman, Frazier, Liston, and Norton. He lost 5 times, but that was also during a time when the heavyweight division was actually a viable division.

Also, Ring Magazine...the most credible boxing mag out there has him listed as the #1 rated heavyweight of alltime.

Dogs playing poker doesn't count as art. :D

Sure it does.

IF you like it and find it humorous it can be art.

At least I used to get a humorous reaction to those funny looking elvis paintings on purple velvet compared to some of the high priced paintings that look like a dog barfed on a canvas in technicolor. :laugh2:

This discussion of art reminds me of a comic I saw one time. I can't remember his name and I only remember one of his jokes or acts. He was talking about seeing a painting that he didn't know what it was of, he just knew that he loved it. He felt he had to buy it and so he did. He was so proud of it he took it to show his Dad, whom he admired for always being a keen judge of everything.

His Dad looked at it and said, "it's a hunk of dung."

Hurt that his Dad didn't like his work of art he took it home and put it in his office. Each time his Dad came by he'd try and get him to change his mind. Each time his father would say the same thing. "It's a hunk of dung."

Some time after this his Dad passed away, and a few years later he decided he wanted a better frame for his painting. He took it down and started removing the frame. He noticed a card in the back.

The card said "Hunk of dung by _________."

I think that was part of his charm.

:)

In all fairness, I do understand why some don't like his style. I just happen to think he's one of the very best.

Sounds like a guy who got his pp shot off on a night recon in the Mei Kong Delta, and that's his way of coping. That, or his wife's 285 with a mustache. :D

I think vocal talent is also in the eye of the beholder, mostly relevant to the preferences of the listener. The utmost in vocal talent, in my mind, are opera singers. And while this may be true in a technical sense, you won't find that many people listen to opera for the talent of the singer. In fact, I'd wager most people don't enjoy listening to opera. (For the record, I love opera.)

Personally, the Beatles' music touches me on many levels. On the other hand, my father told people he thought they were a flash in the pan at the time.

I don't think that they are the end all be all of music, but I think that they opened alot of doors into the realm of modern music with the songs they created, especially around the Rubber Soul/Revolver albums.

They were the musical revolutionaries of their time, and their broad range of evolving style throughout the band's existance is proof of their genius, to me.

I agree 100% with every one of these.
