IRVING, Texas – How times have changed. The Cowboys went 30 years (1982-2010) without drafting an offensive lineman in the first round. Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith broke the streak in 2011. Now in 2015, could the club actually select an offensive lineman in the first round for the fourth time in five years?

Owner/general manager Jerry Jones doesn’t rule out anything, at least publicly, during draft season. At offensive tackle the edges are set with Smith and eight-year veteran Doug Free, who re-signed for a salary-cap friendly three years and $15 million in March. But backup Jermey Parnell’s market value proved too pricey, and the club let him take a whopping five-year, $32 million deal from Jacksonville.

With Parnell gone, the Cowboys need a swing tackle who can back up the left and right sides. Darrion Weems, who missed the season following shoulder surgery, is an intriguing option. But the Cowboys will keep their eyes peeled on draft weekend for a quality backup tackle with starter potential.

Here’s a look at five prospects in the early, middle and late rounds:

Most of those will require an investment in the 1st-3rd rounds. I do not think we are going to be interested in doing that.

About the only low round type is Donnal.

We have scouted Lawrence Gibson and Chaz Green, who will likely be 6th-7th range. That is probably the most Dallas invests.

I'm interested in Ogubhei based on when he goes. I don't want to spend a 1 on a tackle. I think he could be a value if we took him in 2. I think he could be a steal if we get him in 3. I'm not convinced you can trust free to play 16 games and could really use a swing tackle that's probably close to plug and play. If you think Free has lost a step or just can't stay healthy this year there's every chance that you could plug him in at RT next year and be fine.

The same is true for several prospects.

I think this all depends on what the organization thinks of the guys like Hawkins, Dill, Miller, Weems, and Wetzel.

If they think one or more of those guys can develop into the next Parnell, I wouldn't expect a move before the 7th round. But if they don't, I could see them drafting one in the 3rd or 4th.

Just because the current line is excellent doesn't mean you stop adding to or replenishing it.
