Flacco Comparable to Aikman? Even Better?

Ravens fans venerated Joe Flacco long before this Super Bowl run.

I know a few here have posted that Ravens fans bashed Flacco, but I've never seen or heard it. I've only seen the blind homerism that blamed the team but never Flacco. He could do no wrong.

On a Baltimore forum I look at Flacco has been compared to Aikman. He has been said to be more valuable than Brady or Peyton Manning. Just a notch below Rodgers and Brees.

Here is what one poster said about the Flacco Aikman comparison:

In what way is Flacco not comparable to Aikman? You could argue that Flacco is better. Neither were other-worldly quarterbacks, both just played for great teams. Flacco never went 0-11. Flacco didn't have a 31-46 TD-INT ratio over his first three years. Aikman was only truly great in '92, '93 and '95. Flacco has already won as many playoff games with fewer losses.

Flacco hasn't won as many Super Bowls but they aren't that different, I don't remember watching the Cowboys and fearing Troy Aikman. I feared the Cowboys because they were a great team.

They are not even close at this point IMO Aikman was a much better QB and leader. Maybe in time Flacco will get to Aikman's level but I doubt it.

Oh yeah, that Ravens' D has been riding Flacco's coattails all these years. About time Ray Lewis retired, that freeloader. Maybe now Flacco can lead the Ravens to 3 or 4 more Super Bowls. In a row.

They shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence IMO. I don't even have Flacco as a top 5 qb in the league right now let alone a HOFer.

Every team who has a successful season or wins the Super Bowl will elevate their players to elite status. All fans do this including Cowboys fans. Fans are always wanting their guys to be recognized as the best in the league and lucky fans of one team each year get shielded bragging rights for several months, if not longer, until the next season gets well under way. That's just the way it is.

Whether Flacco never sees the Super Bowl again or wins 5 more remains to be seen. Right now, his team has won one. It's a great accomplishment, but it's not anything most other teams have not done once or twice before. If he wins a couple more, then the comparisons to Aikman will be more grounded in reality. For now, he's just the quarterback of last season's winning Super Bowl team.

Lol gotta enjoy the love fest over flacco now. Sure he's better then troy. When he wins 2 more Super Bowls then talk to me

The Ravens have never made the playoffs because they had Joe Flacco at QB.
Not once.
If anything, they've gotten there in spite of his JAG-like regular seasons. He has always been somewhat of a weak link for that team.

But maybe not any more......he was great for three games this postseason.

Even then, without the worst secondary play I've ever seen in a playoff game, the don't even advance past Denver.

Aikman isn't regarded that highly among other NFL fans. Neither is Emmitt. Neither is Irvin. Because those guys had the best offensive line in history... unless you are only comparing offensive lines. Then several obscure teams in history had a better offensive line, but the Cowboys offensive line had Emmitt, Irvin, and Aikman to make them look better. So on and so forth...

But back to the topic. I don't think it's an awful comparison based on their criteria. But there are a ton of differences in mechanics, demeanor, background, etc.

As for the argument if Flacco is better than Aikman? Well ask yourself this... did Aikman win a superbowl this year?

this cant possibly be true

i am pretty sure i have been told (by many on this same message board) that many cowboy fans are just haters and want the team to lose

Ivin wasn't any good because of Aikman and Emmitt, Aikman wasn't any good because of the Oline and Emmitt, Emmitt wasn't any good because of the Oline and Aikman, the D wasn't any good because Aikman Irvin and Emmitt were playing behind the best Oline ever. The best Oline ever only has 1 HoF'er that came to the team in 94 after they won two Super Bowls. Wait I'm sorry that's all just Cowboys hate against potentially the best team ever assembled in football history.

There are fans who will never see anything wrong with their teams as well as fans who believe their team is horrible and need everyone else to think as they do to validate their opinions.

The problem is that those who slightly lean toward the homer or hater sides are forced into full membership with the extreme beliefs all because the homers and haters are worried more about being right than opening their minds that there is truth and fiction coming from both sides.

An offensive line where only one player will be in the Hall of Fame, one Mr. Larry Allen. Dallas won two Superbowls in the 1990s before Allen even joined the team, so I don't know how that offensive line can be considered the best in history. Certainly it was a good line, but if it was the best ever then there should be more Hall of Famers from it.

Yeah don't get me started. It's annoying how much fans around the NFL will do their best to detract from the early 90s Cowboys. They'll argue in circles and deny, deny, deny.

This.

If you need an example of bias toward your team, this is it. I'm not going to diminish Flacco's accomplishment, but he's a good, not a great, quarterback. The Ravens won the SB as a team. Sometimes teams win the Super Bowl with a good, but not great, QB. I think a better comparison is Mark Rypien. Rypien deserves plenty of credit for his SB victory, but I wouldn't call him an elite QB like Aikman.

absolutely agree

"no one on that team was great because all the 'other' players they played with were so great"

circular argument

It's one of the most maddening things I've heard from other NFL fans. And most of the time it comes from guys who aren't old enough to have actually watched the 90s dynasty.
