Lets flashback to 1989 just for fun. Were obviously very happy that Jerry Jones named Jimmy Johnson our head coach. However, lets just say that Jimmy never gets hired as the coach. With that being said, who would you have wanted to coach the cowboys in 89 if Jimmy never gets offered the job and why?

Also, was there a Rooney Rule back then? was Jerry required to interview candidates or did he give Jimmy the job outright?

Would have given Landry another 2 years to see if he could turn it around

yeah i remeber being upset landry was fired and didnt want jimmy at all.

He obviousley won me over but at the time the way it was done with jerry buying the team and dumping landry before the deed was signed seemed classless he deserved more than that.

feels like 1989, only spark on the field is a guy wearing #88 dez ala irvin..in need of a running back and it appears a another sec RB wearing #22 ingram ala smith..new coach has taken over the old ranks garrett ala wade/jerry..with that jerry was very lucky to have jimmy..not sure that i can think of anyone better than him..

I hope you guys are still not blaming Jerry for Landry being fired.

They still do to this day. I always tell them to go do resaearch. Read all the articles on it. It's still JJ's deal. Comes from the top. But the entire thing could have been handled better by everyone. Tex Schramm said it was his fault, as he should have handled it better.

The old saying...if I had a nickle for everytime I heard...."I used to like the Cowboys until they did that to Landry"....

Well, I think people use that as an excuse for when the Cowboys are doing bad to be a fair weather fan....beasue when they are winnig, I do not hear it.

Got many people angry at me for telling them that too.

We had Troy in 89 feels like 1988 when all we had was 88

Remember when everyone last January was comparing 2009 to 1991, simply because we won a divisional playoff game? And that 2010 was destined to be the equivalent of 1992? How'd that work out?

it would not matter who we wanted Jerry would have hired Barry Switzer in 89 he second choice has HC after Jimmy.

No Rooney Rule back then, and Jerry had his coach lined up before the sale was announced.

I loved Landry, but felt like it was time for him to go.

I had always wanted Dan Reeves to take over since he was a Cowboy and a Landry protege', but Reeves was in the middle of a long gig with Denver, so that wasn't going to happen.

I really can't remember who else was available at the time.

We didn't have Troy when Jimmy was hired though, and in 89 No. 88 wasn't really anything special. I don't think Irvin really did much until about 1991.

or they use it as an excuse for their dislike or hatred for the team because they want to be pious and not just say I hate them because they win or they compete with my team. I had a couple of Cowboy haters say that to me and my response was "wait then why did you hate them 8 years ago." Same people 5 years later were saying I hate them because their WR is a druggie. Give me a break.
