Flex Defense?

Pittsburgh discovered that trap blocking worked well against Landry's flex defense and other teams followed suit. The flex also wasn't favorable to permit max effectiveness for rushing the passer. Unfortunately, Landry wasn't inclined to accept the idea of changing it. Even his old friend, GM, Tex Schramm, realized it was high time for Landry to retire toward the end but didn't have the heart to tell him so. Unfortunately, the newly innovative schemes simply passed him by.

For all of you that have deeper understanding of the inner working of football than I do - why doesn't anyone use the flex defense that Landry made famous? My understanding is that the 2 of the front 4 line up on the LOS and 2 others lineup a couple of feet back off the LOS. The reason was it allowed the DLineman to have better angles and to be able to react better to the play once they know it's a run or a pass. Is this correct?

The modern NFL is focused on the passing game.

Stopping the run was the top focus when Landry created the flex defense.

Landry was the 1st to use the 4-3 as a base defense. Other teams were using a 5 man DL at that time which had evolved from a 7 man DL...

The Patriots have morphed to an Undefined base defense. They use:
3-4
4-3
2-5
1-6

I’m still of the belief that the Raven’s D from 2000 ages as well as anything ever created. 2 Fatboy DT’s to stuff the inside run game surrounded by 9 guys that can run. Their DE’s where both around 260-265. Their LB’s.....well we all know their strengths (they basically had a DE playing SLB). And, their DB’s could match up with any scheme because they had players that knew their roles and how to excel in them.
