Medder weighing options
Five years later and offensive lineman Carlton Medder is finally leaving UF.
It’s his dream to play in the NFL, but Medder said Tuesday that he’d welcome a chance to play in either the Canadian Football League or the Arena Football League. His main goal is to play football professionally.
“I would not mind playing there because it’s football at a high level still – not as high as the NFL – but it’s still a high level,” Medder said. “I wouldn’t mind incorporating into that kind of league.
“I just want to play football and get a little chunk of change for it.”
His career at UF might have been solid, but there are still things in Medder’s game that are keeping him from ascending draft charts.
Medder said he has spoken with the Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys. Each has had the same criticism about the 6-foot-5, 319-pound tackle.
“They are pretty much worrying about my quickness and stopping the speed rush,” Medder said. “That’s their main focus, their main deal with me.”
To help with his footwork, Medder trained this offseason with the training guru Tom Shaw in Orlando at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Despite his improved quickness, Medder said he didn’t perform well in the 40-yard dash and expects that to hurt him come draft time.
“The 40 could have been a lot better, but everything else went smooth and well,” he said. “If I could take anything back, I’d train real hard for the 40. I ran about a 5.5-something.”
Medder finished the 2007 with an All-Southeastern Conference second-team selection. He also participated in the 2008 Western Refining Texas vs. Nation All-Star Game in El Paso, Texas in February.
