Can't stand Mike Florio. He's a blowhard of biblical proportions. Far worse than I am:)

But I can ride shotgun with him on this. He's taking full aim at the new helmet rule, which could castrate the game of football for good: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/08/13/heres-a-suggested-new-helmet-rule/

The way it's written, this rule could end the careers of guys that made it to the NFL purely on physicality.

imo its just too drastic of a change, its going to be chaos out there.in our first game Bo got tackled withe the shoulder but they flagged the defender, its almost impossible for a DB to tackle a RB like Bo with just his arms when he is running full sprint.

If someone is going to come out against a rule based on safety then they better have an even safer rule to go along with their reasoning...

He's right on this one.

This is the NFL's latest disaster-in-the-making right before our eyes.

It's like they can't help themselves. "Fix" the catch rule only to break things somewhere else.

its a good rule
the problem imo is the gray area (no pun intended) that is open to interpretation
i cringe seeing dudes diving with the top of their helmets
great way to cripple yourself
i was taught to hit with the facemask, head up but i saw them calling a penalty on a hit with the 'brow' and that is still a safe method imo
as long as you are keeping your head up and not directly compressing your spine should be the goal ie; not hitting with the crown

..this is good. Good on him. I saw 3 incidents already this week that looked ridiculous being penalized. This will only get worse, before it gets bettter.

Right, and I think the calling of this penalty will be refined by September, making incidental contact with crown or apex legal, and penalizing for intentional contact only.

Still a judgement call, so we'll probably disagree with some, like all other calls against our Boys.

This

I think most reasonable people have no problem with the NFL trying to get safer as it’s obviously a dangerous sport and none of us want to see these guys in a wheelchair at 50. But the grey areas in the new rules are baffling and lead to questionable calls. I don’t know why the NFL is coming out with all these rules that fall on the judgement of imperfect referees.

We were also taught to hit with the facemask.

I did once make the mistake of leading with the helmet in a higschool scrimmage, however. Yeah, talk about being concussed. That was unpleasant and could've easily have been worse.

Yep. All this criticism on the helmet rule but none of them have a better suggestion to minimize head trauma in order to protect the league from future litigation .

...that's smack in the middle of natural football instincts. To lower your head a bit and square the body for contact. Now its a penalty?

I say change the rule where NFL players use proper technique when tackling instead of being a blowhard and using the shoulder and head as a weapon.
The NFL has to do this bullcrap rule because the union is suing them. I hate the rule but they have to

I thought the old rule was just fine and the refs were doing a good job enforcing it. Problem is that it leaves to much power in the discretion of the ref to make the call. It not going to be cut and dry. Like pass interference or holding, some will throw the flag at the drop of the hat and some let it play. I am hearing they may make it a reviewable flag. Gonna make a 3 hour game last 4.

Yeah and when they threw the flag the commentators didn’t agree with it either. Can end up causing knee injuries. Players are gonna not see what they are hitting. Heath made a tackle where he used his shoulder and turned and used part of his back to tackle.

I completely agree and I got a bad feeling that knee injuries are going to be through the roof this year.

I'm totally fine with that.

Yep, once this is out there, too late to undo it. The rule is solely based on safety, concussions and CTE prevention.

I am ok with it until we have a 4 pm game and the 1 pm game runs over and they won’t switch over to our game until the other game is over. End up missing half of the first quarter. Not sure if it was CBS or FOX that did it last year and I thought I was gonna have a stroke. Lol
