I know a lot of people have blamed Romo, Garrett, TO, chemistry, etc. for last years poor performance. But we also have to look at a bunch of players that underperformed last year. These guys are supposed to be stars in our team and they all had a down year in 2008.
The question is, was last year a fluke? or are they really declining?
1. Flozell Adams
We all know this guy can dominate when healthy and motivated. But his perfomance was pretty bad during the second half of last season. I am not sure if it was due to injury or if age is really affecting him. We don't have anyone that can replace him, so we need him to have a good year. If Flo doesn't get back in shape and starts playing good football, this will be a very long season.
My take: Fluke - Injuries slowed him down last year
2. Marion Barber
Injuries really affected his play during the second half of last year. But after he came back and was supposedly healthy, he still didn't play the way he used to. Let's face it, Barber is the heart and soul of this team. There have been many games where the Cowboys have been losing and Barber comes in to the rescue. He runs over several defenders and scored a TD. That just motivates everyone including players and fans. Could it be he is changing his running style? Or maybe he can't be the Barbarian while his toe is injured...
My take: Fluke - Injuries affected him. He will be the Barbarian again in 2009.
3. T. Newman
He can't seem to stay healthy enough to be 100%. I know he has played a lot of games, but most of the time he is not 100% due to some nagging injury. Late in the season he showed what he's capable of, but he had a bad game against the Eagles. Not sure what to think about Newman. I know he has the talent to be an elite corner. We need him to be good this year. Jenkins and Scandrick can handle the other two corner spots, but Newman needs to get back to being an elite player.
Conclusion: Hard to tell. He is over 30, and he hasn't been healthy the past two years.
We really need our "star" players to step it up a notch this year. The Eagles game like year is an example of our star players giving up or having terrible games. Do you expect younger players to be motivated when Barber is fumbling, or Newman is getting beat, or Romo is getting killed because of Flor's bad blocking?
I don't care if they are leaders in the locker room, etc. I want them to lead by example on the field. That's what our young players need to see.
