Baseball great Yogi Berra dies at 90
Published September 23, 2015
FoxNews.com

When former Yankees general manager Larry MacPhail first saw Yogi Berra, he said the squat, goofy-looking catcher reminded him of "the bottom man on an unemployed acrobatic team."

At 5'8" with a paunchy body and mischievous smirk, Berra seemed an unlikely baseball hero. But the oft-quoted New York Yankees legend, who won three American League MVP awards and 10 World Series titles, is remembered as a clutch hitter and one of the greatest catchers of all time. He died Tuesday at the age of 90. No cause of death was immediately given.

Berra's death was confirmed in a Tweet from the Yogi Berry Museum, the Montclair, N.J.-based nonprofit that bears his name.

What is unfortunate is, people dont know who he was.

This morning on the radio, they were talking about all the great cartoons he made and how he made people laugh. smh.

He was really the perfect baseball player. He had a funny looking physique and he had all of these great quotes that didn't make sense...but made perfect sense at the same time. And he was an incredible ball player. Very sad to see him go. All of baseball should greatly mourn his passing.

He gave the best quotes since Will Rogers. RIP, Yogi...

On travel:
“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”
“Why buy good luggage, you only use it when you travel.”
“The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase.”
“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

On getting enough rest:
“I usually take a two-hour nap from one to four.”

On education:
“I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.”
“You can observe a lot by watching.”

On the future:
“The future ain’t what it used to be.”

On social life:

"Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
“It gets late early out here.”

On youth sports:
“I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house.”

On the human anatomy:
“I don’t know (if they were male or female) fans running naked across the field). They had bags over their heads.”

On receiving advice:
“Take it with a grin of salt.”

On weather:
“It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility.”

On finance:
“A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”

On baseball:
“In baseball, you don’t know nothing.”
“We made too many wrong mistakes.”
“So I’m ugly. I never saw anyone hit with his face.”
“If the people don’t want to come out to the ballpark, nobody’s going to stop them.”
“Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”
“All pitchers are liars or crybabies.”
“We were overwhelming underdogs.”
“Bill Dickey is learning me his experience.”
“He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.”
“I always thought that record would stand until it was broken.”
“I can see how he (Sandy Koufax) won 25 games. What I don’t understand is how he lost five.”
“I want to thank everyone for making this night necessary.”

On being thought of as a philosopher:
"I didn't really say everything I said."

On death:
“You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours.”

Well, this is sad news. 90 is a good life but it's just unfortunate to see that Yogi has passed. I never really got the chance to watch him play, but I grew up on stories of Yogi from Joe Garagiola. It was like listening to your parents tell stories of your Grandparents. You felt like you knew him.

i did not realize that Joe Garigola was still alive. Listened to him growing up on Saturday Baseball when that was the only baseball game available. And those Saturdays were full of stories about Yogi. My favorite is the Deja Vu all over again. He was a special character.

Thank you so much for posting all of these quotes. Of course we know a few of them by heart, but some of the others not so much.

I got a good chuckle out of this just now at a time when I really needed it.
