FO has a piece up where they compare 2016 QBs' throws by route type. They looked at 12 different route types and ignored the RB-heavy routes (flats, RB screens, swing passes). This is of course inextricably intertwined with the receivers and the system, but interesting nonetheless. Here's how Dak looks among the 34 QBs with enough total passes to qualify:
Route, # of passes thrown, rank among league QBs (DVOA, which is a per-pass measure)
Out, 74, 1
WR Screen, 17, 2
Go/Fly, 15, 2
Curl, 78, 4
Drag, 38, 4
Slant, 28, 9
Post, 15, 19
Seam, 7, 23
Fade, 16, 24
Broken Play, 15, 26
Dig, 28, 31
Comeback, 10, 32
"Broken play" is a play where the QB scrambles and the receivers break their routes, not a botched snap or something like that.
Dak and the Cowboys make their living on outs and curls (no big surprise). The outs are dominated by Beasley and Witten. Dak's curls are among the deepest in the league, but we get very little YAC off of them, which is largely a function of our receiving corps, I expect.
Dak only threw 15 out routes. 12 of them were to Dez, which is where all the value came from.
Dak also threw the deepest drag routes in the league, on average, which is part of why he ranks so high on that route.
It's interesting that he's top 5 on 5 of the routes and bottom 10 on another 5, with almost nothing in the middle of the pack. Again, you can't really separate the QB from the receivers very well here. For the most part, the Cowboys avoid the routes they're not very good at, with the exception of the dig.
