Every year a player gets injured who could return before year's end and someone will ask questions about options. Hopefully this will clarify things a little.
Injured Reserve: When a player is placed on IR his season is done.
This is why many teams elect to use the PUP designation instead. Note, that if a player is placed on the PUP list in Camp he counts towards the 80 man roster designation. Once the season starts if the player is still on the PUP list he does not count towards the 53 man roster. hence the advantage. A player on the PUP list can practice with the team is physically able.
Players on IR do not count towards roster limits.
Physically Unable to Perform: When a player is injured prior to Training Camp they can be placed on the PUP list. Once a player has participated in at least one practice for Training Camp they are no longer eligible to be placed on the PUP list. If a player is placed on the PUP list to start the regular season, they must remain on the PUP list for six weeks. After that the team has 3 weeks to get the player involved in practices then 3 more weeks to activate that player or they remain on the PUP list for the entire season.
