NFLHD is showing "A Football Life: Tom Landry
on now

Thanks for the heads up. As many times as they have shown it, I had never seen it.

Yet another example of us having the dumbest fans in the world: a death threat on Landry smh. Also, everyone wanting him fired and when it happens everyone gets mad. No one is ever pleased.

Landry was before my time but I enjoyed this a lot. Wish it was a lot longer and wish we had another man like this as our coach.

Bum Bright may have been the worse thing that ever happened to Cowboys. It was him not Jerry that fired Landry.

how did the '58 Giants lose a game. With Lombardi and Landry as coaches they should have been 12-0.
George Allens hate for Cowboys was real and there were some great games
Had to laugh when Waters said during a slump he tried to talk Landry into dropping 4-3 for 3 man front

great times- you felt like you were in every game and comebacks were expected and taken for granted

WW2 seemed to breed a type that hasn't seemed to come out since. It's likely for the same reason why various philosophers throughout history have advocated conflict as creating great men.

I watched it again last night. Probably the seventh or eighth time I've seen his. in fact yesterday I watched a football life for their entire marathon while I was doing stuff around the house. It was pretty good to see those again.

NFLN programming sucks. What a cake walk job is that. Love the Landry show. But all they do is show the same stuff over and over and over.
with all the vintage games and footage they have, they can't come up with something different.

The same classic games over and over, the constant "A Football Life" shows over and over. The ever so biased top 10 shows, and the same ones over and over.
The repeated NFL HQ news over and over in the mornings, and also during the season they do this.

You think they could show some old vintage games. All the SB's in their entirety. One a day for 50 days even. Show the entire playoff games from each year.
Come up with some new stuff.

Let's see, I can sit in a room, and say, you know, I think I'll show this episode for the 18th time this week, because I am too lazy to go find something new AND entertaining. I think, yeah, push this button, same repeated show, oh man, I'm tired after that, I need a coffee break.

It never ceases to amaze me how when they talk about Landry and the Cowboys, they always put the emphasis on the offense. They'll talk about the Flex for a bit, but they never really talk about how tough his teams were overall and how rock solid the defense was year after year.

I have watched this about 5 or 6 times and I do really enjoy it. There's a little more to the story of Landry's firing, like Landry knowing he was going to be let go and more or less purposely alluding Jerry and Jerry getting fed up and just calling him.

While the 2 QB system was an abject failure, it had never been done before in the NFL. I can see how Landry would think that it *might* work and I respect him for giving it a try. If it works, he's just added another notch to his genius belt and could win that first Super Bowl. I admire a person that analyzes something like that and is willing to give it a shot over the person the never makes a risky decision. A decision that fails never harms your coaching ability, only your vanity. And vanity is the luxury of fools. Landry didn't have a vain bone in his body.

And it is always great to see how Landry recognized and apologized for coming off aloof towards his players and coaches. It meant a lot to those people for him to say that. Plenty of great coaches were just like Landry, but I've never heard them regret being that way.

What angered most was the way the firing went down. Jerry and Jimmy were spotted together and it leaked to the media. There's no good way to fire anyone especially Tom Landry. Many were going to be angered by it regardless how it was handled. It was hard to imagine Tom Landry the only coach the Cowboys had ever had being fired. Bum Bright offered to fire him but Jerry felt he should do it. Years later Jerry said he regretted not taking Bright up on his offer to fire Landry. Jerry said it was extremely awkward informing Landry of the coaching change and it was the most inadequate he had ever felt. Saw an NFL Films interview with Landry talking about the firing. He said he was on the golf course in Austin when he got a call that Tex Schramm and "Jones" were there and wanted to talk to him.

Landry had a smirk/smile on his face as he recounted it and said he knew why "Jones" was there because he was told earlier in the day that he was flying down to talk to him. Landry purposely flew down to Austin to spend the day with his family trying to appear unfazed by what was going down. The meeting between Jerry, Schramm and Landry took place in a sales room at the Hidden Hills golf course near Lake Travis. It was a 40 minute meeting and reports were Landry came close to crying during the announcement. Even though he knew what was coming, hearing it hit him hard. Witnesses said when Jerry emerged from the room he was obviously shaken and his face was as white as a sheet. Tex was wiping tears from his eyes, it was like they were all attending a funeral.

2 qb system was just an extension of calling his own plays. I was a great way to get the play in but it was a killer for motivation and the offense could never get into a groove. The qb's were to different with Morton being a pocket passer and Staubach a scrabbler. The offensive blocking was never in sync.

I remember how Landry coached the situation. He wasnt afraid to alter the play calling on the fly to the current situation while trying to exploit the opponents weaknesses that he was picking up during the game. Garret seems to stick to same game plan no matter situation. If the play is 3rd and long Garrett looks at his chart and call from whatever plays he has scripted. Landry would evaluate what would work, he would see what he had scripted but also took in account where the other teams defense was struggling, what was working on offense and choose the best play, scripted or not. Jackie Smiths drop is a good example. Staubach said the call wasn't part of game plan and he didnt think it would work but Landry saw a weakness in the defense and knew he would be open. He was wide open but..... Garrett would never do that.

When Jerry bought the team, and I heard the news that Coach Landry was being released, I sat dumbfounded at my kitchen table for about 10 minutes before I even thought to move. I've been a fan of the Cowboys since I was 8 years old and was trying to figure out how the Cowboys could continue to be the Cowboys without Coach Landry. I was 23 when he was released after 88. I was in North Carolina, in the Marine Corps and there were a bunch of us who wanted Jerry's head. And I mean, REALLY wanted his head. As a matter of fact, I hated Jerry Jones for years. Took me a long time to get over that.

Now that I'm older, and a tiny bit wiser, I understand that when you buy a football franchise you have the right to do things your way. But I still feel that Coach Landry was slighted with that quick release. I know we went on to our dynasty years after that, but no man deserved at least one more season to prove himself under the new ownership than Tom Landry. And no man deserves more credit in the legacy of the Dallas Cowboys than Mr. Tom Landry.

RIP Sir. You guided men on the field and off the field like no other.

Grew up in Mission TX,Tom Landry's hometown, played in Tom Landry stadium (our rivals were the mission Eagles) and the amount of respect and allure he gets is so amazing. Most people can't believe that the great Tom Landry came from such a small border town like Mission. I will admit, my first time playing in that stadium I was a bit in awe.

Agreed, the programming sucks...I don't have it anymore. About the only thing I miss is Erin Coscarelli in the morning.ha
I'd rather watch some week 8 game from a couple years ago that had a good ending then those stupid top tens. They used to show last years games on Sunday's during the offseason, not sure if they do that anymore or not

On Landry, that poor man would have been roasted horribly if there was a CZ toward the end of his tenure. Radio call in shows were constantly calling for his firing, then Jerry does it, and everyone acted like he shot their dog. Don't get me wrong, I was mad/sad too

I ssssooo agree. Do a rivalry week. Show classic games of the Cowboys-Commanders rivalries from the 70s.

Show older games to let fans who've never seen some of the greats play a chance to become familiar with a previous generation.

The quality might not be great, but I still think there'd be an audience - assuming the entire NFL games broadcast collection has been disposed of, which would be a major tragedy.

By the way, I got a chance to interview Tom Landry - one of the highlights of my career. He seemed bitter about his departure from Dallas, though he was too classy to pout about it. But I could tell it hurt him. Then again, it's difficult to part ways with an organization you'd been coach of for decades.

But ... I don't fault Jerry and Jimmy for what happened. As much as I love and respect Tom Landry, the game had passed him by, and, prior to getting canned when the new regime came on board, many fans thought it was time for Tom to hang up his fedora. And I was one of those fans.

True but there were many before Jerry was even in the picture hollering for Tom to be fired, claiming the game had past him by. One thing about Cowboy fans no matter who it is, if you are not winning they want you gone and are very vocal about it. Meredith and Aikman two prime examples. I would never have thought fans would turn on Troy but they did. Now you don't find many who will claim it but at the time there are ample voices dumping on Landry

You got that right. I heard it in the seasons before he was fired, fans where not happy with how things were going and wanted change at HC. You don't seem to find many willing to admit it now but between the Dallas media and talk radio there were ample people wanting him replaced and then when it happened Jerry took the brunt of it, I think in large part because of how he got up and boosted that night when he bought the team

As much as I respected Landry I was one of those who wanted him fired. Most fans wanted a change they just didn't like the way Landry's firing was handled.
