Remember all the moaners here about how Parcells let Hoffman go? That, & the Dallas "writers" who were talking about what a great job he was now doing in Atlanta with the kid who was going to do all the kicking (punts, kickoffs, FGs)? Along with the inference that our kicking would be so much better if he were still here.
Well, the kid missed FOUR field goals yesterday. Steve Hoffman's protege. The Steve Hoffman who supposedly can take any ol' scrub off the street & turn him into Adam Vinateiri. The loss of whom supposedly has doomed Dallas kicking forever. In fact, the kid did so badly, he's apparently no longer going to handle FGs (according to ESPN).
Don't get me wrong--I don't have anything against Hoffman. But the idea that he magically can cure all kicking ills doesn't fly. And I really defy anyone to tell me that the Dallas kicking would have been any better were he still here. It ultimately comes down to some internal fortitude on the part of a kicker (so maybe Vandy needs to feel dissed in order to kick better--whatever gets those balls thru the uprights).
From the article:
Notebook:Kicking 'an issue,' Mora says
ATLANTA - Placekicker Michael Koenen was perfect during exhibition games.
Maybe too perfect.
Koenen made all eight of his field goal attempts in the preseason. But cynics wondered how Koenen would react after a miss or two during the regular season.
Two weeks into the regular season, the answer if obvious: Poorly.
Koenen missed field goals of 30, 36 and 40 and had a 38-yarder blocked in Sunday's victory against Tampa Bay. He is 2-of-8 this season after going 2-for-4 against Carolina in the season-opener.
"It is an issue," head coach Jim Mora said of the kicking game. "We feel like we have the people in place to rectify the situation."
Koenen's struggles should not be a surprise considering his history. He converted only 58 percent (43-of-74) of his field goal attempts during his college career at Western Washington.
Koenen continues to excel punting. He punted twice for a 42.5-yard average.
