For Jerry Jones, the bottom line is money, and winning is just the Shinola

A team can struggle to win playoff games and still win the merchandise business.

2025: Cowboys ranked #1 in overall team merchandise sales at Lids

2024: Parsons #9, Lamb #17

2023: Parsons #9, Lamb #13, Prescott #20 in NFLPA player-product sales

Even with crappy seasons on the field, they ranked first in Lids' 2025 team merchandise sales.

Money is what really matters to Jerry, while winning is little more than shoe polish.

Winning requires humility, sacrifice, and a willingness to put the team ahead of personal pride. Jerry Jones appears unwilling to do that.
Disagree.

Jerry's problem is ego.

The salary cap has a minimum as well as maximum.
-Spending the minimum would only save a very small portion of real dollars.

The Cowboys in 2025:
Revenue 1.3 Billion
Profit 510 Million

Do you think Jerry would choose losing just to save less than 30 Million?

Jerry is first and foremost a businessman and entrepreneur; he has made the Dallas Cowboys the highest-valued sports franchise in the world for several years now; he was instrumental in formulating what is now the NFL’s revenue model, bringing in billions of dollars into the owners’ coffers.
The Dallas Cowboys and the Star on their helmets have worldwide appeal as evidenced by merchandising sales and licensing agreements…this is what matters to Jerry the most.
The Cowboys are no longer a sports team, not like they were in the 80’s, winning Championships and Super Bowls; they are now a brand…and a brand they shall remain so long as the Jones family are the owners.
Jerry is an incompetent GM at best; focusing on bringing personalities into the organization who will not diminish his stature, rather than improving the team.
Every year the Cowboys, per their ownership, are on the verge becoming a playoff contender, only to have the fans’ hopes dashed by questionable personnel moves, schemes and underwhelming play resulting in missing yet another round of playoffs despite having one of, if not, the highest player payroll in the NFL…rinse and repeat.
Under Jerry’s tenure, excluding the JJ era where Jerry had no active personnel role, the Cowboys, as a team, have been mired in mediocrity and irrelevance in the NFL landscape. While a bevy of players, coaches and coordinators have come and gone; there has been but one constant: Jerry Jones.
Pretty good post right here.

Bravo my friend! Read like a Bob “Purple” Haze posting here. Well done.

I don't think it's just about the money otherwise Jerry wouldn't be restructuring contracts and making trades or get under the salary cap. He even pays certain coaches more to retain them. What we have with this upper management is serious coach hiring and player acquiring incompetency; and a lack of football team development foresight and or football IQ agility. Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones are also consumed with other major business venues and Will McClay VP of Player Personnel and his scouting department seem to lack inspiration or creativity and offer mediocre player acquisition results at best.

1000000000%

Winning championship cost too much, having to also give up power and reduces profits
Losing too much reduces revenue

Mediocre is the happy medium that ensure highest profitability. Being close keeps people engaged. Tuned in.

Proof: we have been mediocre for so long, yet rake in highest profits and are most valuable.

Jerry is the worst GM in NFL history and that is saying a lot since there have been some very poor GMs (Raiders, Browns, Jets, Giants). Since 1996, 30 years, the Cowboys under Jerry Jones won the NFC East 8 times for 26.7% divisional success rate. They have won 5 post-season games and lost 13 for a 27.8% win rate. They have no appearances, much less a win, in the NFC Championship game for a 0% success rate. Despite this poor performance, Jerry Jones, the Owner, has enriched himself 120X over his original investment. He is laughing at Cowboy fans all the way to the bank. He is winning the game that means most to him and that is wealth, not football. If he was serious about winning football he'd hire a talented GM who would hire a winning coaching staff and draft winning players. But Jerry is still trying to convince the world that the Cowboys success from 1992 - 1995 was due to his leadership as GM, not Jimmy Johnson's astute player selections and coaching. If Jerry was responsible for the success from 1992 - 1995 why can't he replicate that same success today? Simple answer, it's because it was due to Jimmy Johnson and not Jerry Jones. It is not that the game has passed Jerry by, it is because he never was the source of success. That is evident over the last 30 years of Cowboy poor performances. Wake up Cowboy fans and stop rewarding Jerry Jones the Owner for the poor performance from Jerry Jones the GM.
I don't reward Jerry. I don't go to the games and I never buy any merchandise. But Jerry is still in charge ! That's a bummer

I think Stephen said that and The Star were his most proud accomplishments

This has got to be the most original post ever in the history of the zone. What a breathtakingly genius thought. The fact that you folks won’t just move off this burried horse is as senile as Jerry’s old butt is.

What more could Jerruh freaking do this year? It might not be working yet, but he has done his part in the past year to change how things have been going for three decades.

I agree that ego is a big part of the problem, but I think money and ego can both be factors. Making money and winning aren't necessarily his priorities in that order.

Jerry has built an incredibly profitable business, and I don't believe he would intentionally choose losing just to save a few million dollars. But I do think he wants to win on his terms, with his people, and without giving up control.

To me, that's where ego comes into play. He may be willing to sacrifice some winning if it means maintaining control over football operations. The issue isn't necessarily that he refuses to spend money; it's that he wants to be the one making the decisions, even when those decisions don't produce the best results on the field.

In 2026, the Cowboys are officially valued at around $13 billion, making them the most valuable sports franchise on the planet, with an annual revenue of around $629 million, which shows that they are not only popular, but also extremely profitable.
