I think you guys should realize that this defense is different from Mike Zimmer's. In Wade's D it is not designed for a shutdown db. For example, most of the time our dbs play 10-13 yards off the reciever. Ok, now you can run slants, outs, comebacks, and wide reciever screens all day. The idea is for the linebacker to fill that underneath area and prevent the slant or make a quick tackle. In addition, Wade has stated on many occansions he wants the play in front of them. It has worked this season too. We have given up (to my knowledge] only one deep pass in 6 games. Thats a major improvement over the past 3 seasons. Now to think of it I guess you would consider Stallworths td a long pass. So two touchdowns. Still a major improvement from last season. Zimmer defense for Newman was to get him up in the recievers face and go mono e mono. Personally, I think this suits him better but we are a team and the concept is more important. Moss did beat him on slants in the 4th quarter. If you rewatch the game your notice hes not getting very good push or strength from his legs and Moss just threw him. Hes hurt but playing through it.
Not only is Newman's play similar to other db's around the league but its becoming a theme. Did anyone see the Indy-Denver game 2 weeks ago? Champ Bailey was in similar situations playing 10-13 yards off and also got beat three times in a row by tight end Dallas Clark. One of those plays was for about 25 yards. Did anyone watch DeAngelo Hall last night? The self proclaimed best db in the league[his MNF intro?) He was getting beat left and right.
What Im saying is more than half the time hes getting beat is because of the design of the coverage. Hes still a really good corner who tackles well. Hes just not healthy and were not use to the new defensive strageties. THe strageties has created more turnovers though. I think Wade baits the QB by letting up the 8 yard comebacks over and over and then sends the db loose to jump it on a few plays with help from safties (example Newmans pick.) There is no suprise why Henery was leading the league in picks too before he was injured. THis style really suits his game. Hes not a mono e mono cover guy. Hes needs to play off to and use his instincts. I beileve this is what Cleveland ran when he lead the league in INTs.
In closing, all I have to say is get used to it. THats the philosphy of our coaching staff. All I ask is this, before you rip the guy look around the league at other top notch corners and notice the similarties. Bailey is good but a tad overrated. Hall is majorily overrated. The best dbs in the league are guys that fly under the radar like Al Harris, Rashon Mathis, and the guy were going against this week Wingfield. Newman is not Superman by no means but hes in that group.
