I think the majority of Zimmer haters that you'll hear from are bandwagon guys that love the team as much as the most recent games outcome......there are, however, true Zimmer hating die hard fans out there, and I like you, do not understand why.....it is one of the things that has puzzled me most about this teams fan base. I think Z has done a great job, and I think anyone who can have, void major injuries, a consistently top ranked defense hashe's had deserves a lot of kudos!!
I am not among the anti-Zimmer club, but I am going to defend them here. They are NOT bandwagon fans. Some of them are very knowledgable about football, and they bleed silver and blue. In short, they are great people.
To get to the crux of their disgust simply look at the sack totals and takeaway totals for the years since he took over as the DC. Those totals were some of the lowest in the NFL.
Now, I've long maintained (and continue to preach) that this has more to do with the personnel than it does the DC. As was mentioned in this thread already in 2003 we had the #1 defense, but that is predicated strictly on yards allowed. It has nothing to do with points allowed, sacks, or takeaways which are better indicators of a dominant defense.
We're building towards those things and I think the man has done a great job. He did more with less than most DCs could have. That is just my opinion. No one has to agree with me, but I'd argue my point until they were sick of me.
Back to the bandwagon fan comment. I have another name for bandwagon fans. I call them "fans." I simply don't need to dislike my fellow fans when I can so easily dislike Eagles, Commanders, 49ers, and Cardinals fans.
