For Those Saying We Can't Contend Next Season

Stop it just stop it. We can if we upgrade the offensive line. Look around the NFL some of the best teams in the league like the Packers, Saints, and Patriots all are ranked 20th or worse in total defense. Also even with all the issues we had this past season we could've very easily been 11-5 had we not given 3 key games away. @ the Jets, and Vs Detroit and NYG. This is a different day and age we don't need a great or even good defense to win, but we do need a better offensive line. If we can get one this team can contend next season.

Plus you never know how some of these teams are going to be next year. If we don't fully address the oline and D though, we won't be competing, period, though. You can't always just count on your offense to get you out of their. Also the pack and saints D may be rated poorly also but they get a ton of turnovers.

We competed this year even with all our problems. We simply gave 3 games away and still had a chance to win the division. The Packers create turnovers, but the Saints don't get alot of turnovers. Both teams simply outscore teams. We can do the same if we upgrade the offensive line. I'm not saying we don't need to upgrade the defense because we do, but the offensive line should be the priority. We upgrade it and we'll contend.

It's a cop out to say that we can't compete next season.

There are plenty of teams that go from being awful to competing the next season.

It's up to Garrett to make the personnel changes that will get us there.

compete for what? a playoff spot or the super bowl? super bowl is still two years away.

2009 New Orleans Saints say hello.

Again, I'm not saying that we're going to win the Super Bowl. I'm just saying that a lot can change in a year.

I didn't say we could contend as currently constructed. I said we can contend if we upgrade the offensive line.

I was where you are 6 years ago. No one could talk me out of it either.

Considering our division alone is stacked with pass rushers, that in itself is a good enough reason to get a stout o-line.

Unless of course we don't care if Romo ends up in a box.

The guys like a matador out there curtaining bulls from every angle.

ok...

how do we upgrade the oline? what about the defense? if we had 40 million under the cap to play with then maybe i would play along. but this team has too many holes and not enough money to fix things in one year.

for once, lets be real with ourselves guys, this is a two year project.

You're right. As long as we have a healthy Romo we can always compete as well.

We were 4-5 plays from being possibly 12-4. Let that marinate for a while. As pathetic as we are it could have been done. I'm actually glad it didn't as Jerry would have been content with continuty.

We need wholesale changes, but finding guards and centers are a lot easier then finding OT's. And cheaper! Now the D needs bigtime changes. I've been clamoring for years on this board that our ILB's were horrible, and now we are paying for it. Look at SF, they have two studs. I would like a youger vet and then get Bruce up to speed. My #1 priority would be to get Cambell from Zona. He is a beast when paired with Hatcher could be awesome.

We will see.

that was an elite offense with a serviceable defense that had playmakers in the secondary.

We can make the playoffs.

After that, who knows? Just get in.

so you'll be ok with some "progress" next year and not want to fire everyone after a heartbreaking loss?

Draft, free agency, and maybe a trade.

Watching the game the other night I couldn't believe the protection Eli was getting. He just stood back there all by himself. Just think if Romo had that kind of time. He would absolutely shred defenses. He has never been able to do that but I think with a couple of picks he can.

For this team to be a playoff team next year it needs to:

Get 1 starter at CB
Get 1 starter at ILB
Keep Spencer or get a replacement at OLB
Replace Kenyon Coleman with a more dynamic pass rusher at DE
Replace one guard

If you want a SB contender then add these changes...
Another new guard
Improved play at center
Another safety, instead of Elam

Can...Can't...Will...Won't

Only an idiot would say or believe we can't.

Not easy to take an optimistic view point two days after any season ends in bitter dissapointment.

I do believe that the 2012 Cowboys will have history and recent NFL trends on their side.....

Teams like the Cowboys (teams with established elite QBs) almost always rebound the year after missing the post season.

Then you factor in the ebb and flow of effort and financial resources expended by teams that do and don't make the post season.

A team like the Cowboys with a lot of nice cornerstone pieces and the QB, who made mostly prudent cap decisions in 2011.......then go on to underachieve and come up a little short for the playoffs.......tend to go all in the following season.....

The Cowboys will be big players in FA, rentention of their own FAs, almost certainly filling more gaps than are created and end up fielding a better team in 2012.

Then you factor in the effort increase from the majority of players on the team that didn't achieve the previous season.......

That all adds up to not only a team that will most likley make the playoffs, but one that will probably have one of the better records in the NFL and excellent post season seeding.
