play well at LB?

Opinions on his first "significant" playing time on defense?

I thought he played pretty good. I'm still watching of course. In the first half he was constantly pushing his guy back. However, he was mainly blocked by a TE. But there was one play where he bowled over the TE, then pushed a OL (Scott I think) back to bust a run play. Just before the Williams int, he pushed the lineman back, making Addai cut it sideways, allowing Ayodele to tackle him for a loss. (The announcers said Williams, but he was already on his way to the ground.)

Overall, I think he did great in run support. I didn't really see him rushing the QB though. Seemed to mainly keep his lane, something Ellis got caught on a few times.

Watching the game live, it's hard to break down everything thats happening on the field. With Carpenter going in and out of the game I didn't even bother to really keep track of him. Can someone with tape of the game review his overall performance and lay it on me? :) I have a DVR coming soon, but not just yet...

I believe it got pressure once on Manning and made manning sprint out .

Not sure, but I thought on a few of those plays where they were running wide he was there to make a play, but couldn't get off the block? I would have to watch again, but that was what I was thinking. I do believe he had a pretty solid game though, and I could be wrong about the first point.

I think Bobby will be a good player, but I have to say I'm not convinced he's an OLB...

I believe he could be a great ILB in this 3-4...of course that would mean beating out Akin, who is starting to play very well right now.

Bobby will have to play OLB the rest of this year, and I think he will be solid...I think he would be much better inside though.

There was the one play where he was pushing the TE back and if he would have ripped off, he could have made the tackle for a loss, but once he got off the block he was able to chase down the RB for the tackle anyway. He is pretty quick.

The TE kept grabbing his jersey around the shoulders which prevented him from ripping off easy. Carpenter needs to work on snapping his arms up to rip off the block, but the Refs need to watch for that hold as well. Course, that happens all the time and doesn't get called so I could care less.

For that matter, the Indy center (Saturday?) was constantly grabbing jersey and holding bigtime. Ferguson and Coleman were constantly having to try ripping his arms off.

I think he did alright when he rushed manning but he played poorly against the run and could not get off of blocks.

We must be rewatching different games then, cause from what I could tell he was a force in the run defense. He had the one play that he didn't get off the block right away, but still made the tackle.

The outside guys first job is to contain and keep the runner moving laterally, which is exactly what he did...making the tackle isn't the sole way to judge how someone played.

I suspect he'll be expected to make some tackles also. He also lost contain a couple of times while he was being blocked. However I do agree that saying he 'played the run poorly' is a bit of a stretch. He was OK.

Which plays are we talking here? Just let us know the time of game and we'll take a look at it. Cause I didn't see anything.

Last night while rewatching the game, I focused on who was in at LOLB.

Carpenter, for the most part, did a fantastic job of taking on the tight end and pushing him back, forcing the running back to go wide. He rarely got pushed back. It was interesting, too, to watch his stance. He stands in front of the tight end with his arms extended in front of him, then extends them all the way out when making contact to get good leverage. As someone else said, if he could have ripped away from the tight end's grip, he would have had a chance to make several plays.

Against the pass, Carp had a few good rushes against the tight end, particularly pressing Manning into an incompletion when Manning left the pocket. But Carp didn't close the pocket, or get much push the few times he faced linemen. However, Carp was also not called upon much to rush the passer. He mostly played the run and dropped into coverage ... and I didn't see any passes going to his coverage zone.
