Used Gimp 2 instead of Photoshop. Can't beat free. (though there is a bit of a learning curve to Gimp)

Ever try Paint.net? It's also FREE and it's easy to use with lots of options.

Actually I haven't. It seems to be a replacement for MS Paint. Gimp is quite a bit more powerful and a closer match to Photoshop is terms of what it can do. I use Gimp because it runs on both Windows and Linux. I will take a closer look at Paint.net for a quick editor that isn't quite as complexed as Gimp for small jobs. Thanks for the heads up!
