What would your rule change suggestion be
Division winners get a berth in playoffs. Then 3 WC teams. 1 team gets a bye and SEED the others 2 through 7 BY RECORD. 2 plays 7
3 plays 6. 4 plays 5

Even though I HATE the Eagles, imagine their point of view. They've won 13 games and still haven't clinched their division or guaranteed themselves even a home playoff game yet. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is 8-8 and has clinched the division, gotten a home playoff game and can use next wek as a bye if they choose. I guess winning 5 more games than another team means Jack squat. Yeah I know the "rules".. They need to be changed in the offseason for more fairness.
How would you change them?

Forget Dallas for a second!

We have 12 wins AND may have to travel to Tampa Bay for the playoffs who may only have 8 wins. We may need to play our starters next week hoping Philly losses to the Giants, while TB rest their starters next week.

It is SO stupid a team automatically gets a home playoff game if they win their division. Since the NFL went to 8 divisions, almost every year, their is a division winner that has a worst record than a wildcard team.

The way it should be: The top 7 teams in each conference make the playoffs regardless of division AND they are seeded from best record to worst! Of course the teams with the highest seeds get the home games. Common sense!!!

Sounds formidable! Not happening though

Im 100% in agreement with you. I wanted to use Philly as an example. When I advocated changing the rule, everyone thought I wanted change only because it affected our team the Cowboys.

Well we hope your Eagles will be treated better in the future.
Aren't you the biggest Carson Wentz fan (outside of Carson's mom). And didn't your love affair begin when he was an Eagle?

Iggles don't give two turds about this. They are in the midst of injuries and a losing slump at the worst time of the year. I love every minute of it.

Divisions in professional sports are stupid in general. The top 4 seeds should be the teams with the 4 best records in each conference, and each conference should play everyone else in the conference once with two rotating out of conference games per year. That’s how you truly determine the best teams in each conference, everyone plays everybody and best record wins out.

NBA figured that out years ago. But the NFL and it's fans seem to mostly be against it.

That's just the way it works out. Two years ago they called us the NFC Least remember? No team deserved to be in the playoffs but someone has to win their division.

5 games different? You're out of your mind. Thats a horribly weak take. The Eagles (and Dallas) are in the NFC EAST. Best division in the league this year.
5 games is HUGE in a 17 game season. A 9-8 becomes 14-3. However, it’s not 5, but 9 games that are different. Ignoring Divisions and seeding based on overall record is just plain flawed unless all teams play the same teams OR the NFL adopts the College system and has a committee to determine comparative “quality” wins.

Just no.

Teams play completely different teams.

We got to play the horrible AFC South.

Other divisions had to play the AFC East or West.

Schedules are WILDLY uneven in strength.
This, This and This.

If they don't play everybody then the schedules can't be even.. thus you have to preserve the current settings. One of the big reasons by NFC East had (up to this week) all four teams still in play off contention is that we played a woeful AFC south.. and cleaned up.

I'm not necessarily saying that TB isn't a weak team.. but they still had to play their schedule and finish on top of their division. It is what it is.

This and this.. how quickly some fans forget.

Very different tune when we crawled into the playoffs on the back of some pretty poor games.. battle of the least loser team.

I actually agree. Division titles shouldn’t hold so much weight when it’s only 4 teams per division. I think division winners should be guaranteed a playoff berth but seeding should depend completely on record.

Its not college. Dallas didnt play Prairie View and Yale. They played a tougher schedule than Tampa Bay. And at this point , have 4 more wins. Thats what Im saying.
