A defense attorney for Joseph Randle has asked a judge to halt further action on the former NFL running back’s criminal cases until he receives another mental evaluation.

“I believe that there are issues related to my representation of him and his understanding of the nature of the proceedings against him and his ability to help me” with his defense, Steven Mank told Sedgwick County District Judge Jeff Goering during an appearance for Randle, 24, on Thursday morning. “And so I’m asking that he be re-evaluated by Comcare,” Sedgwick County’s community mental health center.

Randle in June was deemed competent to stand trial in two of his criminal cases – one alleging he hit people with his car during a housewarming party in February and the other alleging he dodged police trying to serve him with a warrant – after he received his first mental evaluation through Comcare. He also is charged in two other cases.

The latest accuses him of damaging a television belonging to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office on July 28. The other accuses Randle of threatening to kill a jail deputy who denied him phone privileges in May.

Randle, a Wichita native and former Dallas Cowboy, has been booked into jail multiple times over the past year in connection with the string of legal troubles. He’s been incarcerated since June 19, according to jail records.

Randle has pleaded not guilty to all charges lodged in the four cases. He was scheduled for jury trials in three of his cases next week. The other case, involving the damaged TV, was scheduled for a bench trial Thursday, but that didn’t happen because of Mank’s request.

Sedgwick County Assistant District Attorney Alice Osburn, who is prosecuting all four of Randle’s cases, had no objection halting action on the cases.

The judge agreed to do so and told Randle that representatives from Comcare would meet with him soon, and then prepare a report within about two weeks.

The report, Goering told Randle, will give “us some idea of where you’re at.”

“And we’ll know what to do with your cases, and we’ll proceed accordingly.”

You sort of don't feel bad for him because he had the oppurtunity to be the lead back behind a solid young Oline and he dropped it, but he also has some demons. He was always considered 'off', or a 'character' by his teammates, so he's dealing with some mental issues for sure. People talk about mental health and how important it is to talk about, but will throw guys like Randle and Gregory under the bus even though they obviously have issues.

Poor dude. I feel bad for him, period. Whatever slope he's on, it's slippery and things aren't going well. I hope he gets the help he needs.

How soon can we bring him back and put him in the lineup?
