Miles Austin-WR- Cowboys Mar. 23 - 11:36 am et

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram confirms that the Cowboys are not close to a long-term contract agreement with restricted free agent Miles Austin.

"We've got (some of) our guys restricted, and the thing I'd say about restricted guys is obviously we want them on our team," said executive VP Stephen Jones. "At the same time, those things usually take more time in terms of urgency." The Cowboys will likely wait until after the draft, and for Austin to sign his high tender, before entering serious negotiations.

I just wonder how loud the explosion would be if for some reason Dallas were to allow Austin to be signed by another team, then trades both 1sts to get in the range to take Dez Bryant.

I love this team and want them to win.

But I must say the idea of this event is intriguing just to watch the heads explode of posters on all the Dallas boards.

Not enough to actually wish it would happen. But the though is hilarious.

I have no reason to think the Cowboys will not take care of Austin. Each year some big name guy is up for contract and the Cowboys take care of it. Any team making an offer for Austin would have to give up a 1st and 3rd not to mention Dallas would have the right to match any offer. As we saw with Ware long term contracts take some time to put it all together where both parties can live with it.

The headline should have said:

Cowboys being patient with restricted free agents

They'll take care of Miles. Just like they did with Demarcus.

I agree. What I don't get is those who feel the Cowboys should just give the player whatever they ask for. Contracts should be something both sides can deal with. Jerry has a responsibility to 53 players that make up the team and until this season a cap to get all these player within.

Anyone who thinks we are going to lose Austin should post it now. Because there is no way in hell he is leaving.

I wouldn't go that far. I personally don't believe any team will be willing to part with a 1st and 3rd for him but if for some reason he did get an offer and it was for really big money, I think Jerry would seriously consider taking the picks. The WRs coming in for visits are all top of the draft guys so I think they are either trying to bluff Austin's agent or they are covering the possibility that either Austin leaves or RW11 has another bad year and is let go after 2010.

While I seriously doubt Austin leaves, I can see a way it could happen. Turning an undrafted free agent into a 1st and 3rd in just a few short years is not a bad deal at all.

I was an original Austin bandwagon fan but I'm waiting to see what Miles does to start off the 2010 before I'm ready for Dallas to hand him big money...

And you wonder why Jerry has a gag order on everyone. Writers twist words so much that they have almost cut themselves entirely out of getting any real news from the Cowboys.
