This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but drafting is important.

Not every first round pick is a star, but you sure as hell are going to find more stars in the first round then you're going to find in say, the fourth round, or worse yet - the undrafted free agency pool.

What we saw yesterday was a painfully mediocre offensive performance, but when you consider the painfully mediocre level of effort that has been put into personnel on offense, why should that surprise anyone?

Of the 9 players who saw meaningful snaps at the skill positions yesterday, only ONE of them was taken in the first round, and he's the only player who was taken before the 3rd round.

---------
QB Dak Prescott - 4th round

RB Ezekiel Elliott - 1st round

WR Allen Hurns - Undrafted
WR Cole Beasley - Undrafted
WR - Deonte Thompson - Undrafted
WR - Michael Gallup - 3rd round
WR Terrance Williams - 3rd round

TE - Geoff Swaim - 7th round
TE - Blake Jarwin - Undrafted
-----------

This hodge-podge of middle-of-the-road JAGs has absolutely exposed McClay, Garrett and Linehan. Is there a team in the league as inept at identifying talent at wide receiver and tight end?

I can't think of another elite, or even really good offense in the NFL that has devoted less equity into building their offensive skill positions.

Side note - being undrafted doesn't mean you aren't a quality NFL player. We've seen plenty of those on the Cowboys roster through the years.

It's not the undrafted players killing this offense... it's the drafted one, the one in the 4th round

No doubt, you can sometimes hit on an undrafted guy. We have in the past, and there are undrafted guys in the NFL succeeding, but I don't think it's a good thing to make a habit of trying to squeeze something out of undrafted or late-round players. When you fill your roster with a bunch of late-round/undrafted guys, the odds are not in your favor.

If they step up and win the job, by being better than everyone else (ex: Miles Austin) then that's one thing, but if you bring in a bunch of undrafted JAGs to compete against other undrafted JAGs, you're not doing yourself any favors.

Awesome point! I never knew...

Both are issues. You've got a middle-round QB, throwing to undrafted and middle-round WR's.

Where is the investment in talent? There's no equity put into either of these units. It's a bare-bones, "hope for the best" approach.
