2006 Mock Draft

First Round

1. Houston Texans: REGGIE BUSH, RB, USC - The Texans have many needs and may trade down, but Bush is going No. 1 - no matter what. He'd supplant Domanick Davis right away.

Jay Cutler's stock has risen so fast recently, he could go as high as No. 2 to the Saints. (Doug Pensinger / Getty Images)

2. New Orleans Saints: JAY CUTLER, QB, Vanderbilt - Cutler's rising stock, strong arm and athleticism makes him a better pick at this point than Matt Leinart. He should be a rookie starter.

3. Tennessee Titans: MATT LEINART, QB, USC - Offensive coordinator Norm Chow won't let his boy Leinart get away, and Vince Young is falling at this point. Leinart will sit behind McNair in '06 and start in '07.

4. New York Jets: D'BRICKASHAW FERGUSON, OT, Virginia - The Jets released Jason Fabini and need a replacement. Ferguson is the surest commodity in the draft and will take over at left tackle.

5. Green Bay Packers: MARIO WILLIAMS, DE, N.C. State - If they re-sign Aaron Kampman, the Packers will take A.J. Hawk. In their current state, a pass-rushing complement to KGB is a major need.

6. San Francisco 49ers: AJ HAWK, LB, Ohio State - The Niners are losing Julian Peterson, and possibly Andre Carter, in free agency. Hawk would start on the strong-side as a rookie.

7. Oakland Raiders: VINCE YOUNG, QB, Texas - Young won't fall past Al Davis, who is notorious for his willingness to take risks. The Young-to-Moss connection has scary upside.

8. Buffalo Bills: MICHAEL HUFF, DB, Texas - The Bills were forced to cut Lawyer Milloy and Huff wowed scouts with a 4.34 40 at the combine. They'll consider Vernon Davis as well.

9. Detroit Lions: VERNON DAVIS, TE, Maryland - New coordinator Mike Martz will lobby hard for Davis, who solidified his top 10 status with an outrageous combine. He's just too talented to pass up.

10. Arizona Cardinals: JIMMY WILLIAMS, DB, Virginia Tech - Williams will push 35-year-old Robert Griffith to start at free safety. The fact he can play cornerback is a luxury, even though the Cards already have young corners.

11. St. Louis Rams: CHAD GREENWAY, LB, Iowa - Greenway is the safe pick and will take over for Chris Claiborne, who was a bust before he was cut. Question: Is Greenway a middle linebacker?

12. Cleveland Browns: BRODRICK BUNKLEY, DT, Florida State - Bunkley is a scary man and more athletic than Haloti Ngata. He'll anchor the 3-4 defense the Browns have installed under Romeo Crennel.

13. Baltimore Ravens: LENDALE WHITE, RB, USC - Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor are unrestricted free agents, and White will be an excellent pro despite playing a backup role to Bush in college.

14. Philadelphia Eagles: HALOTI NGATA, DT, Oregon - He may be the top player on the board at this juncture. Hollis Thomas appears on his way out, and Ngata would battle to start in '06.

Manny Lawson is the athletic freak of nature the Packers need to chase after opposing quarterbacks. (Grant Halverson / Getty Images)

15. Atlanta Falcons: MANNY LAWSON, DE, N.C. State - The Falcons waived goodbye to veteran Brady Smith in March and need a player to push Chauncey Davis. Lawson is a top athlete.

16. Miami Dolphins: SANTONIO HOLMES, WR, Ohio State - Unless they get Terrell Owens, the Fins will need a wideout opposite Chris Chambers. They could also look to trade up for a quarterback.

17. Minnesota Vikings: LAURENCE MARONEY, RB, Minnesota - Maroney in Minnesota would get fantasy leaguers' attention. Mewelde Moore would be relegated to third downs, where he belongs.

18. Dallas Cowboys: ANTONIO CROMARTIE, CB, Florida State - He didn't play as a junior due to injury, but Cromartie's combine had the-next-Deion Sanders written all over it. He is not a reach.

19. San Diego Chargers: CHAD JACKSON, WR, Florida - Keenan McCardell is 36 and Eric Parker isn't anything special. Jackson ran a 4.32 40 at the combine and is too talented to pass up.

20. Kansas City Chiefs: TYE HILL, CB, Clemson - Speaking of 40-times, Hill ran a 4.3-flat during his. The Chiefs have pledged to go young with their next crop of cornerbacks and Hill fits the bill.

21. New England Patriots: TAMBA HALI, DE, Penn State - Richard Seymour is entering a contract year, and the Pats could use a pass rusher with questions surrounding the status of Willie McGinest.

22. Denver Broncos (via WAS): DeANGELO WILLIAMS, RB, Memphis - They love having multiple running options, and the explosive Williams would give them another one to share carries with Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: WINSTON JUSTICE, OT, USC - With Todd Steussie and Kenyatta Walker hitting free agency, getting a starting tackle in the draft would be a coup for the Bucs.

24. Cincinnati Bengals: LEONARD POPE, TE, Georgia - The 6-foot-8 Pope would solidify a mediocre situation at the tight end position and provide another receiving option with uncertainty at quarterback.

25. New York Giants: ERNIE SIMS, LB, Florida State - Carlos Emmons is old and Reggie Torbor has been injured. Sims is an athletic linebacker and possibly a speed rusher on the outside.

26. Chicago Bears: MARCEDES LEWIS, TE, UCLA - The Bears will pray Pope falls to them, but his stock has risen and that doesn't appear likely to happen. Lewis is 6-foot-7 and slower, but sure-handed.

27. Carolina Panthers: DARNELL BING, SS, USC - This allows 05 first-rounder Thomas Davis to move to outside linebacker. It hinges on the whereabouts of free agent Will Witherspoon, however.

28. Jacksonville Jaguars: NICK MANGOLD, C, Ohio State - The presence of Mangold's huge rear end allows incumbent Brad Meester to move to guard, shoring up an already excellent offensive line.

29. Denver Broncos: MATHIAS KIWANUKA, DE, Boston College - Trevor Pryce was a cap casualty and Kiwanuka is a character guy. If he falls here with Williams on board, the Broncos score big.

30. Indianapolis Colts: DEMECO RYANS, LB, Alabama - Once considered a top 10 pick, Ryans' stock fell by skipping the February Combine. Outside linebacker is a Colts need with David Thornton a free agent.

31. Seattle Seahawks: BOBBY CARPENTER, LB, Ohio State - The Hawks took a second-round chance on Lofa Tatupu in 2005 and it paid off. Outside linebacker D.D. Lewis could use some competition.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: DEREK HAGAN, WR, Arizona State - It appears free agent Antwaan Randle El will depart, and the Steelers need quality depth behind Hines Ward and Cedrick Wilson.

Second Round

33. Houston Texans: ERIC WINSTON, OT, Miami - Offensive line is really the Texans' most glaring need. Winston doesn't necessarily project as a left tackle, but he'll start as a rookie anyhow.

34. New Orleans Saints: THOMAS HOWARD, LB, UTEP - Howard is an athletic marvel and it may be asking too much for him to start right away. Nonetheless, he steps into a high-need area.

35. Tennessee Titans: KO SIMPSON, FS, South Carolina - If he's still here in the second, the Titans will have drafted a pair of legitimate first-rounders. They could move Lamont Thompson to strong safety.

36. New York Jets: KAMERION WIMBLEY, DE, Florida State - The Jets are shopping John Abraham, but will consider the athletic Wimbley here whether or not they've traded the disgruntled star.

37. Green Bay Packers: DANIEL BULLOCKS, SS, Nebraska - This may be a little high, but the Packers would have to love their safety situation by pairing Bullocks with budding star Nick Collins.

38. San Francisco 49ers: CHARLES SPENCER, OG, Pittsburgh - Adding a beast like Spencer is always a plus, even when your offensive line is already full of unproven youth. He'd compete to start.

39. Oakland Raiders: ASHTON YOUBOTY, CB, Ohio State - Youboty didn't measure up at the combine (two inches shorter than his listed size as a collegiate), but he has serious shutdown ability.

40. Buffalo Bills: MARCUS McNEILL, OT, Auburn - The 6-foot-9, 330-pounder has left tackle upside, but his legs appeared too thin at the combine. He'd still be likely to start in his first year for Buffalo.

41. Detroit Lions: MAX GEAN-GILLES, OG, Georgia - The Lions have major issues at the guard position with Kyle Kosier hitting the free agent market and Damien Woody's weight problems.

42. Arizona Cardinals: JONATHAN SCOTT, OT, Texas - Bringing aboard a capable and true tackle allows the Cards to move Leonard Davis or Oliver Ross inside to their natural guard spot.

43. St. Louis Rams: CLAUDE WROTEN, DT, LSU - Free agents Ryan Pickett and Damione Lewis won't return with the La'Roi Glover signing. Rams fans will still say "not another defensive tackle!"

44. Cleveland Browns: SINORICE MOSS, WR, Miami - There are other needs that may take precedence for the Browns, but they won't let the speed demon get past them if he's available.

45. Baltimore Ravens: JONATHAN JOSEPH, CB, South Carolina - Joseph ran a 4.31 40 at the combine and the Ravens need a nickel corner badly. He's too ready for Baltimore to take a pass.

46. Philadelphia Eagles: RYAN O'CALLAGHAN, OT, California - Some will say this is a reach, some won't. But with Jon Runyan a free agent, and Artis Hicks more suited for guard, it addresses a need.

47. Atlanta Falcons: JASON ALLEN, DB, Tennessee - The Falcons have DeAngelo Hall and about nothing else in their defensive back corps. Allen could start at either free safety or corner.

48. Miami Dolphins: CEDRIC GRIFFIN, CB, Texas - They started a fourth-rounder in 2005 and made Sam Madison a cap casualty. It's a lock the Dolphins take a corner with a high pick.

49. Minnesota Vikings: DONTE WHITNER, SS, Ohio State - Whitner is a "Jacked Up"-type hitter, and the Vikes need somebody who can tackle. Corey Chavous' free agency makes strong safety a need.

50. Dallas Cowboys: GABE WATSON, DT, Michigan - Mixed views on Watson, and the presence of less-questionable defensive tackles may result in a draft-day fall. America's team will end that here.

51. San Diego Chargers: RICHARD MARSHALL, CB, Fresno State - The Bolts will look hard at D'Qwell Jackson here. Hard. However, if they want to improve in 06, they need to bolster their secondary.

52. Kansas City Chiefs: JESSE MAHOLENA, DT, Tennessee - Maholena doesn't have huge upside but will be an able rookie starter. Hill and the high-floor defensive tackle improve the defense immensely.

53. New England Patriots: JOSEPH ADDAI, RB, LSU - Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk are aging, and Addai's performance at the combine was excellent. Count em: two insurance picks.

54. Washington Commanders: RAY EDWARDS, DE, Purdue - The Commanders have a need at linebacker, but will be willing to take a risk with their first pick. Edwards is skilled, but a problem child.

D'Qwell Jackson has the speed and the fire to compete in the NFL as a classic middle linebacker. (Jamie Squire / Getty Images)

55. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: D'QWELL JACKSON, LB, Maryland - Shelton Quarles and Derrick Brooks are still productive, but grizzled. Jackson and 2005 second-rounder Barrett Ruud are the future.

56. Cincinnati Bengals: PARYS HARALSON, DE, Tennessee - The Bengals need a pass rusher badly and will also consider Darryl Tapp here. Haralson is the safer bet and they'll snatch him up.

57. New York Giants: KELLY JENNINGS, CB, Miami - The whole Giants' defensive unit can use help. Will Allen's impending free agent exit makes the cornerback position a high priority.

58. Chicago Bears: DEVIN HESTER, CB, Miami - The Bears need a nickel and Hester is an explosive return man. His 4.27 40 at "The U" pro day will push him into the second round.

59. Carolina Panthers: ANTHONY FASANO, TE, Notre Dame - Fasano skipped the 40 at the combine, probably for good reason. However, he's a playmaker and terrific pass-catching option.

60. Jacksonville Jaguars: DOMINIQUE BYRD, TE, USC - Byrd isn't a flashy player, but he gets the job done meaning he'd fill in well on the Jags' offense. They need more targets for Leftwich.

61. Denver Broncos: JOE KLOPFENSTEIN, TE, Colorado - Jeb Putzier wasn't the answer and was shown the door. Klopfenstein would only have to compete with former basketballer Wesley Duke.

62. Indianapolis Colts: MAURICE DREW, RB, UCLA - The third-down back won't be capable of handling a 30-carry load, but would compete for a starting job and be able to share carries right away.

63. Seattle Seahawks: MARK ANDERSON, DE, Alabama - Anderson had the best combine of any defensive end, and the Seahawks know they need insurance for Grant Wistrom and Bryce Fisher.

64. Pittsburgh Steelers: ABDUL HODGE, LB, Iowa - He's rated higher and may be gone by this pick, but we can't find out where. The Steelers wouldn't hesitate, though, as they love linebackers.

I really can't see us going for a corner in the first round. We have too many other needs.

If we pick up another piece for the secondary in the first round I'll be physically ill.

Agreed. I would be pretty pissed if we took a CB in the 1st with Chad Jackson AND Winston Justice still on the board.

I hate florida state, but cromartie is the man. I think we have other pressing needs like offensive line, linebacker, and WR, but you can never have enough good corners.

A CB in the first round... hmmm, can he play safety? I guess this would mean Dallas would have already secured OT, C, a replacement for Larry Allen if he's released and at least one starting LB in free agency. We already have two top-ten draft picks and a big money corner in the secondary.

Yeah, lets draft a CB in the first round when we have desperate needs at LB, OL, and S. As Dave Chappelle would say...Whhaaaat!

Like the second round pick though.

So, if he is a reach, what are they saying about us?

That we are imbeciles for reaching and for an injured corner at that?

Wow, think this one is totally off base. BP said himself he would never take a corner in the first round with all the rules restrictions db's have on them. Think this guy mailed in his picks sitting in some house in Canada.:lmao2: :lmao2: :lmao2:

Ain't happening, but many would love to nab Watson in the 2nd. He's good value there but not in the 1st.

Give me Justice at #18 and we have a deal.

If Dallas picks a CB in the first round, I'll never hear the end of it from my roommate. We always joke about Jones' fascination with CB's since there was a stretch there it seemed like they drafted a CB pretty high up.

that was me. but i meant in the 2nd round. i agree with the other posters above on preferring a guy like ot justice at 18, or even wr jackson. and, if abdul hodge were available at 49, i figure that dallas would seriously consider picking him.
