FoxSports.com: 10/10/07 He Said, She Said-Emmitt vs Barry

Which I'm sure had zero do do with:

Dallas O-Line > Lions O-Line (C Kevin Glover & OT Lomas Brown = multiple pro bowls)

Michael Irvin > Any Lions recievers (WR Herman Moore = multiple pro bowls; Moore & Brett Perriman both had seasons of over 1,000 yds, Detroit had a better WR tandem (hell, the trio of Moore-Perriman-Willie Green was even better than ANY WR Cowboys WR group in the 90's)

Troy Aikman > Any Lions QB (only area of clear superiority, however Scott Mitchell was, for a short time, very prolific - in 1995 Mitchell threw 32 TDs and over 4,300 yds)

Cowboys Defense > Lions Defense (Lions' D had multiple pro bowlers: MLB Chris Spielman, NT Jerry Ball, SS Bennie Blades, OLB Pat Swilling = nothing to sneeze at)

Detroit ST > Dallas ST (Detroit had pereniel pro bowlers: KR Mel Gray & K Eddie Murray - remember him?)

Emmitt was amazing. Absolutely outstanding. But I doubt, very serious, had Barry played in Dallas during that time frame that we'd have some how been worse because he wasn't Emmitt.

And that has zero to do with:

Barry had the heart of a lion

Emmitt had a heart the size of TEXAS

That sums it up pretty well.

disregard that Emmitt is making guys miss in the first 3 yards in 80% of these, and now watch a Barry highlight where the first 6 yards are wide open in 80%.

It was all Emmitts Line, yet Barry did it himself.

Please, the stats ANDDDDDDDDDDD highlights say it all.

Barry WAS electrifying, he as spectacular, but in no means at all was he BETTER than emmitt.

I'll settle for they were equal, but I will never agree that one was better than the other. I think they BOTH were perfect for their schemes.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Emmitt made his line look better than what it was.

we are cowboy fans. guess what we will think.... I wonder...

the rest of the NFL, sprotswriters, fans of other teams, non-homers...all say

barry was one of the greatest.

and they say emmitt was one of the greatest.

argument finished.

Pure running back, Barry Sanders hands down. Emmitt had more touchdowns and playoff success because he was on the better team. You couldn't stack the line every play against Emmitt because the Cowboys passing game would stomp you in the ground. That wasn't true for Barry, yet with space (not cramped in the red zone) Barry could still grind out yards against a stacked line. Yardage wise, Barry Sanders was kicking Emmitt's butt until he retired earlly. If Barry hadn't retired he would easily be the all-time rushing leader and Emmitt would have been some distance behind.

I love Emmitt as much as the next rabid Cowboys fan, but even my silver and blue goggles don't hide the fact that Barry was the best pure running back. His running style/ability is jaw droppingly amazing.

Silver and blue goggles my ash. The goal is not the accumulation of YARDS (especially make believe yards, the mythical "IF" yards), the goal is to accumulate the most TOUCHDOWNS (although Emmitt holds BOTH records).

NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE is disputing Barry's grace and electric running ability. Barry is most definitely the greatest player ever .... if the criteria is the ESPN highlight reel.

You want rings, you go w/Emmitt Smith, AND IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE.

As for the "Emmitt played on a better team" hater's mantra, the Dallas Cowboys do not win REGULAR season games without Emmitt, forget the frikkin playoffs.

It is a shame how soon people forget.

I agree, people do have short memories.

the "what if" stuff drives me crazy. You can say "what if" on almost anything. The hypothetical theorizing is fun, but it doesnt really mean crap.

but I dont understand when people say "what if you put Barry on Dallas"...do folks really think Barry Sanders would have been successful in the Dallas power run game? That wouldnt have fit his style at all....and Dallas wanted Emmitt to do everything. He was a much more all around back than Sanders. Barry Sanders would not have fit nearly as well in Dallas imo

Barry Sanders is lucky that Green Bay passed on him at #2 and that he went to Detroit's run and shoot spread out offense, with a turf stadium. It was the perfect fit for Sanders.

That's why I don't believe Barry would have done better in Dallas, because all those big linemen and him would be like oil and water.

People also need to remember that MNF game against the Vikings in 99 when Emmitt had 140 yards at the half, AT THE HALF and had TD runs of 63 and 24and then broke his hand and couldn't return for the 2nd half. I just think about what he could've end up with for that game had he not broken his hand. That would have added to the legend. A lot of people forget about that game when discussing or dissing Emmitt.

I was SICK that he couldn't finish what he started, and there were still 6 minutes or so left in the 2nd quarter when Emmitt left the game. I wonder who's idea it was to keep him out of the game and what the reason behind it was. That costed him his 5th rushing title, that's why I was so hurt about it. He was leading the league in rushing when he got hurt, and Edgerrin James ended up winning it. How awesome would it have been to see Emmitt win a rushing title at 30 years old, when he was supposedly washed up?
