Let's give Parcells some credit
May 16, 2007 | 10:05AM | report this

Everyone is thrilled that Wade Phillips is more hands off than Bill Parcells.

But let's be sure to give Parcells his proper due.

He is a Hall of Fame coach.

And just like in New York with the Giants and Jets and in New England with the Patriots, Parcells should receive total credit for rebuilding the franchise.

It's amazing how Dallas fans refuse to give Parcells his due.

Sure, he didn't win a title.

But do you remember what the Cowboys were before he took over?

Do I need to evoke the name Dave Campo?

And let's remember the bind that Quincy Carter put him in.

Phillips is the right coach to take over for Parcells.

And I think Dallas is going to the playoffs this year.

But let's put Parcells run in Dallas, and his credentials as a great coach, in proper perspective.

12 guys better than Favre right now
May 15, 2007 | 10:01AM | report this

I had my list armed and ready for my radio show. Space prevented it from making yesterday's column.

Remember, these are quarterbacks that I would rather have in 2007! This is based upon age, recent history and projection into this campaign.

Here are the quarterbacks I would rank ahead of Brett Favre.

1). Tom Brady

2). Peyton Manning

3). Carson Palmer

4). Drew Brees

5). Donovan McNabb

6). Philip Rivers

7). Marc Bulger

8). Matt Hasselbeck

9). Steve McNair

10). Tony Romo

11). Vince Young

12). Ben Roethlisberger

Yes, Young outplayed Favre in 2006. It wasn't even close.

And Roethlisberger's 2005 season and relative youth makes me believe that he will bounce back in 2007.

I won't even include Jay Cutler and Matt Leinart, though I think both will explode and have better seasons than Favre in 2007.

Obviously Mike Vick would be there, but I have questions about his leadership and a possible suspension.

Please understand that I think Brett Favre is an all-time great. He is a legend who changed the Green Bay Packers. This list reflects worth and projected effectiveness in 2007.

I will say that parcells helped rebuild the cowboys, i give him credit for that;

Yet, at same time, Parcells was stuck in his ways unwilling to change
case in point, back when billichick was defensive coordinator with parcells as head coach, and billichick devised a plan to stop barry sanders, instead of covering him with a linebacker, billichick put a defensive back on him, parcells cussed him out all during the game, saying he couldnt coach a high school team, etc, that he would never coach in nfl again if he failed, well they stopped barry sanders and won the game, parcells was speechless,

then, like we played and everyone knows it, played a vanilla defense last year, playing 2 gap technique, teams picked up apart, with parcells refusing to change, and parcells would be stubborn like drafing a guy like jacob rogers, whom the scouts told him no, dont, he is injury prone, did parcells listen, no, rest is history, thats how come billichick won those superbowls with patriots, he would adapt his team wtih their playing capability and teach them right way, while parcells was stuck in his old ways,

if makes common sense if teams have enough tape on you to figure out what your doing, etc, their eventually going to beat you, unless you adapt, change up your defenses, etc,

so while parcells helped rebuild the cowboys talent level, he had some serious defects,

I don't know of a single person that would ever say that this team isn't better off now than before Bill.

And let's remember the bind that Quincy Carter put him in.
It was Parcells' decision to keep Carter in 2003 and not sign Delhomme.

I agree.

If we were to win the Super Bowl, then Parcells deserves the same credit that Dungy deserves for Tamp Bay's Super Bowl.

BP was great for the Boyz and he left this team full of talent. Have saying that, it was time for him to go. He was so set in his ways that he didn't use all the talent he gathered properly. I'm a huge BP fan and have tons of respect for him but I'm glad he's gone. I truely believe this team is gonna take off under WP. Our D is gonna be unbelievable and I see JG and Sparano guiding our offense to a top 5 season. The ball will go downfield early and often and I see JJ running draws and lead draws for big yardage behind a much improved BIG oline... Thanks BP for loading up the talent now sit back and watch how well it works when used correctly..

I obviously can't say that Dallas circa 2002 was better than Dallas circa 2007 but the same can be said for every crappy team in 2002 save the Millen lead Lions.

However, I do think that Dallas' spot in the cycle of things would be further along if the little meeting on the tarmac never occurred.

Parcells used Jones for the money he desperately needed, Jones used Parcells for a new stadium. Great deal for those two, lousy deal for the average fan.

One correction needs to be made. It was Jones who wanted to give Carter the chance; Parcells want Jake Delhomme so Jones lowballed Delhomme and he went to the Panthers.

If Parcells had not come, Lacewell might still be here and Ireland may never have been promoted. And Jerry might not have ever come to the realization that the job should be left to the scouts. Who knows who we would have had as a coach. I'm not sure how anyone could believe that we would have been further along. Sure, it's possible, but what on earth could you possibly base the belief on?

Why?

Jerry Jones and his crew had gotten progressively worse both in record and talent every year since Jimmy Johnson left town. Theres no evidence to indicate things would have gotten better had he not hired Parcells. Probably we would have had to suffer through a couple more years of QCard/Hutch stinking it up, and more 5-11 records or worse. Then Jerry would have rushed Henson in and Romo would have been sent packing somewhere for a song before he even saw the field.

Jerry without Parcells= Al Davis

I don't think anyone is saying that either, but people are saying that Parcells handicapped the franchise for whatever reason, him being an ego-maniac, stubborn etc.

Indeed. But Schein's point was that despite that, he made the team better. And that that is somehow contradictory to what people are saying. My point was that no one is saying that he didn't make the team better.

Its pretty well known that Jerrah wanted Q to have his shot. Delhomme had really shown nothing to think he would be capable ot taking a team to the SB; and lets be honest= how good has he been since that year?

We all know it's early, but I thought Romo was clearly better last year. I have no reason to believe that an old, disgruntled Favre will be better than a rising star like Romo this year. I'm not being biased. I'm just going on what I saw last year.
