I did not know this but there are two kinds of FTs,

Exclusive means you retain his full rights but have to pay top 5 average of 2019 QBs around 33

However,

The non exclusive allows Dak to seek offers but you start at top 5 qb money the last 5 years avg around 27mil and you can match, if Dak gets two big an offer you let him walk you get TWO(2) first round picks..

How can the DC FO NOT go with option 2?

What team would possibly offer Dak 0ver 30-33 and have to pay 2 first rounders?

Its win for the DC as they can pay less PLUS show dak his true market worth by offers..

I did not know this existed but it does,..

The DC are high if they think another team will overpay for Dak to steal him from us, if they do 2 first rounders, seriously ill move on from Dak for that, is a risk sure but I doubt that happens..

if this is true im doing this in a heartbeat, solves both issues how much is Dak worth and gives us time to work out the deal and retain his rights..

if not 2 first rounders, you can use those to move up and grab a good QB in the draft..

Personally, I don't think we will offer him the exclusive tag. From an economic stand point, it doesn't make sense. I don't think any team offers the two first round picks, thus, what is the benefit from paying him more, just to keep teams from offering a deal?

We're doing a deal with him, I really doubt they franchise him. And the non-exclusive tag, like it or not, would be considered a slap in the face and create a lot of ill will.

I like a lot of things about Dak, but I'm on the side of thinking he's a really good, not great or elite, QB. He's good enough to lead this team to a SB with the right coach and cast. So 10-12ish in terms of QBs. The price for a new contract for that level is probably 35M, sounds crazy, but that's what it is.

What if its two later first round picks. Is that still worth it? I would tag him with it, but i wouldnt be shocked if someone were to offer it.

I don't see how any sensable agent lets a 4 year starter at the most valuable position play on a freaking tag.

Especially since those 4 years where him basically playing/starting for free......

I love the idea of the non-exclusive tag. Let's find out what he's really worth.

Better yet, would Cincinnati take Dak and our first and second round picks for their #1 overall.

Joe Burrow here? Do it.

No team would give 2 no 1 picks for Dak.
In fact, no team would give there no 1 pick for him.
The only world Dak is a franchise QB is here in Dak la la land.
Tier 3 QB riding a Tier 1 offense.....
If you disagree then answer me the following.......where is Dak's mega-deal contract?

Exactly.....:omg:

He will be signed for around 35 million a year, they are working in the length. If we go far in the playoffs the price will go up.

LLLOOOLLL

Would Dak pull a Cousins or a Bell?

I don't see him getting tagged, and I don't see him turning down $27mil, but it's a fun question regardless.

Yup i'd do the non exclusive and hope some bottom feeding team gives me 2 1sts...Miami i'm looking at you!

Every time I think I can't be surprised by how little people around here understand true NFL player and draft pick valuations, I get shocked again.

2 1sts is a lot less than it takes to move up I net the top 5 to get a QB that’s likely not as good, depending where the team in question is drafting. You could bundle them with your own first and get your guy in the draft, but that’s still a huge risk.

How do you sign a free agent then lose 2 first for signing him?

Sounds like the 2 first are compensated picks. They might not come from a team they might come from the league. So if we lose Dak the compensatory picks will start in 2021. The year Trevor Lawrence might come out.

The franchise tag doesn't work that way. The team signing gives up their next 2 first round picks. It has nothing to do with compensatory picks that we have gotten in the past. That's different.

Non-exclusive franchise tag: This is the most commonly used tag. When commentators colloquially refer to the "franchise tag" they are generally talking about the non-exclusive version. This is a one-year tender offer for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years, or 120 percent of his previous salary, whichever is greater. The player can negotiate with other teams. The player's current team has the right to match any offer, or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if he signs with another organization.

Exclusive franchise tag: A one-year tender offer to a player for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year, or 120 percent of his previous salary, whichever is greater. The player cannot negotiate with another team. The bump in pay scale (current average salary versus averaging of the previous five years) means only the very best receive this tag -- players for whom teams would gladly give up two first-round picks to sign. Generally, QBs are the most likely to receive an exclusive tag, but the Pittsburgh Steelers used it on running back Le'Veon Bell last year.

Transition tag: The transition tag is generally a half-measure utilized to give an organization the option to match a contract. The transition designation is a one-year tender offer for an amount that is the average of the top 10 salaries at the position -- as opposed to top five for the franchise tag. It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player might receive from another club. The tagging team is awarded no compensation if it chooses not to match a deal. Last year, the Chicago Bears placed the transition tag on corner Kyle Fuller, then matched the contract offer from the Green Bay Packers.

The problem is Amari Cooper needs to be signed as well
