Any idea who makes the line calls when Costa is at center and Freddie is at guard?

I did not see the game until after I got home from work at 6am. I had read the comments how Freddie didn't play as well at guard.

I concentrated on his play because of those comments.

My impression was he played pretty well actually. What did I miss?

I thought (and could be wrong) but the center always makes the line calls.

What I think was amazing is how much work he got in this game at both spots and he did a hell of a job for a rook!

I could almost swear the left guard made the calls when Dallas out a rookie out there a few years ago.

Something like Cory Proctor played center and Kosier called the line assignments.

I'm not certain though.

You could be right! I do remember something like that. I mean, it's not impossible for the guard to make the line calls?

I think it is stupid to expose Fredrick to inury by playing him at guard with the scrubs. He is our center, his future is not at guard for this team. They are looking for a replacement at RG, and have Berny back which means that they like Fredrick at guard. Putting Fredrick at guard and Costa at center does not give the best 5, it weakens 2 positions, guard and center. Costa is not as good a center as Fredrick, and Fredrick is not as good a guard as he is a center. Fredrick should exit these pre-season games when the rest of the starters do.

Fred needs the time at both positions. There is too much uncertainty at G to ignore options. The benefits of him getting snaps at G and C outweigh the risks. He needs snaps period. He's got to be ready to play with the big boys in less than a month. And the team needs to evaluate who to play. I think Bernie will be ok but Livings is a question mark as well as Ski. There could be more injuries. This is deja vu all over again as Yogi would say.

He wasn't bad. He got pushed back once and slipped a couple of times on the infield trying to make run blocks and fell down another time on a reach block. He just wasn't as good as he was at center. Lateral movements aren't a strength.

With the ongoing turnoil at the OG position he needs to be ready in case he is needed there due to injury.

I don't think having Costa blown into the backfield several times a game is the team's first choice, he's not one of the best 5 when Bernadeau is healthy,,, if Bernadeau gets injured then things will be ugly enough to move Fred to RG...

I haven't given up on Kowalski being able to play RG at an "OK" level... but obviously he needs to get himself out there to have a chance.

He was injured on the July 30th and was listed as day to day... Well... lots of days have passed since then.

I would think Parnell would be returning to practice shortly too. He was listed as missing one week on July 30th.

Yeah more than anything they're trying to get him experience at guard in case beta dray is injured

He looks like he has the ability to play guard but just looks like he's thinking too much and playing tentative he missed his guy on a couple of plays

He'll get better at guard the more he plays

I'm getting a bad vibe that Kowalski might not even make the team as I am really pulling for the kid. But, he needs to get his butt on the field, pronto.

He may not.

The "locks" at this point are:

Smith
Leary
Frederick
Bern
Free

In OK shape to make the team:

Costa- I got to believe that he makes the team based on that he is probably the 2nd best center.
Parnell- When healthy he's proven to be a decent swing tackle.

That leaves 2 or 3 spots. Arkin, Kowalski, Cook, Livings and whoever else is competing for these spots.

Well, out of these, Arkin, Kowalski, Cook, Livings, maybe Kawasaki does make it because I think he will be better than Arkin or Cook, but then again, maybe that is my biased thoughts. And I have no clue about Livings.
