Free Agency ineffeciencies

I didn't and still get our free agency spending. It feels like we've just added good players with no thought for what we needed. For example at the start of free agency we had:

LDE: Lawrence, Armstrong
RDE: Gregory
3T: Hill
1T: Woods
Hybrid: Crawford

Drafting: Gallimore & Anae
Signing: Poe, McCoy, Griffen, A.Smith

That's an overspend we couldn't afford. If we were smart we would just signed a single quality DT, along with Aldon Smith while cutting Crawford. With two linemen drafted that'd give us nine (including Gregory) and the opportunity for a UDFA such as Hamilton or guy like Joe Jackson to temporarily make the roster until is Gregory back or if we wanted to carry ten. We can also use Jaylon as a DPR/linebacker.

Assuming the DT was expensive with a 10m cap hit, we'd still have an additional 14m spare that could have been spent elsewhere. Looney (2.4m), Erving (2.5m), Clinton-Dix (4m), enough to sign the most expensive OC and safety in free agency along with a good 5m swing tackle. Or instead of Brown, we could have just kept Byron Jones at his ridiculously inflated price.

What we did was wasteful.

I think they were trying to fix the DL. I’m spit balling here.

There was a lot of uncertainty to just put all the house chips on Aldon Smith. Even though he seemed to turn his life around, he still was and is a loose cannon who essentially had to relearn the position on the fly, all while being an aging DL.

How he's looked so far has been nothing short of miraculous.

We lost better players in free agency than we brought in. Our defense took a huge hit losing our top pass rusher Robert Quinn and our top corner Byron Jones.

Who’ d thunk ? Our Defense had room to go from bad to worse ?

I think McCoy was supposed to be that big free agent signing. And up until training camp it looked like Hill may be replaced. Gallimore and Crawford were the insurance for both those players. At RDE, we took a flyer on Aldon but had no idea what to expect between him and Gregory. Anae was just a talented football player and you can never have enough pass rushers. It may all feel like duplication this year, but its also about future years with many of the free agents on 1 year deals.

Erving and Dix now look like wasted signings, but at that time at worst looked like experienced players at positions of need. Who would you have liked to get instead of them and Looney?

We're too worried about appearing clever.

In reality, we took a low-risk, high-reward gamble on Aldon Smith, which looks great by the way.

We signed two past their primes Defensive Tackles in McCoy and Poe, that people chose to ignore, did not play well for the Panthers last year.

We also signed a Safety who was with his 4th team in 15 months, and he didn't even last til Week One.

We signed a young Corner with good size to a 1-year deal. Do teams typically let guys like that hit free agency? I like Worley but he's not exactly a world beater.

We signed a journeyman Tight End, no real big expectations there.

It’s definitely gotten worse upfront and in the secondary. Quinn had 11.5 sacks in 14 games last season. He was suspended the first two games. Although Byron Jones wasn’t a playmaker he could cover.

Quinn was awful against the run and Diggs will be on par with Jones soon.

Smith has easily replaced Quinn BTW.

Quinn wasn’t great against the run but he was terrific rushing the passer. Our pass rush has really suffered this season. Aldon Smith is the only one consistently getting around the QB. Diggs has really struggled. It’s been trial by fire for him. He has potential but the jury is still out. We’ll see if his confidence is still intact by the end of the season. I’m far from sold on him.

Okay, that’s fine, sign Griffen but we didn’t need Poe, McCoy, Griffen, Aldon, Gallimore, Crawford, and Anae. You’ve got back someone and I’d prefer to have backed Aldon Smith and Gregory over Looney even before the miraculous performances.

Exactly. Poe and McCoy were the fatboys that were going to stop the run. Aldon Smith was a lottery ticket that appears to be hitting. Griffen fell in our laps late in the process and signed for a price we couldn't refuse.

You don't draft a guy like Gallimore for this year's roster, you draft him for what he will be in 2 or 3 years. And in Gallimore's case they did it because he was the guy with a high second round grade sitting there when their pick came up in the third round.

The only real "waste" was Clinton-Dix and that A) was bad evaluation and B) not much money.

If Jamal Adams had been a FA and we missed out on him because of money, there is obviously a mistake in the approach. But we signed everyone we targeted and finished the offseason with 13 Million left over, so we didn't miss out on anything.

Smith has easily replaced Quinn BTW.

Smith has been terrific but he’s the only one who gets consistent pressure. Everson Griffin hasn’t been anything special and he was the one as a replacement for Quinn. Would rather have Quinn although he currently has an ankle injury. Our secondary is going to continue to get toasted unless we find a consistent pass rush.

Poe and McCoy were signed before Woods signed his tender and before we drafted Gallimore. Griffen was signed almost at the last minute. We had to bring him up to speed quickly. Crawford was coming off double hip surgery and we didn't know if we'd ever see Gregory in uniform again. Factor in a DE that hadn't played professional ball since 2015 and again:

A ton of uncertainty.

Diggs will be on par with Jones soon.

Can’t let this comment go without a response. Jones was a 5 year veteran and was rated as one of the top corners in the league. He also had an All Pro/Pro Bowl season on his resume. You’re dreaming if you think Diggs will be on par with Jones anytime soon. lol Diggs has been getting beat like a drum all season. He has potential but the jury is still out on him and will be for a while.

seriously now you know this but here let me fix your post

LDE: Lawrence, Armstrong Underperforming position Armstrong a jag if anything
RDE: Gregory- suspended until game 7 wasn't guarantee of a reinstatement
3T: Hill- was labeled a bust last year so how do you even count him in
1T: Woods- needs better shoes and gets hurt a lot was late sighing his tender question his dedication
Hybrid: Crawford-coming off double hip surgery

everything they did was Necessary and with McCoy going down before game 1 well even more necessary

and?

you are using hindsight and if those new player s arent here most likely Lawerence gets doubled and tripled and the rest we get nothing from..they only appear to be better because of the new ADDITIONS..

OP DIDNT PUT ANY THOUGHT INTO IT..APPERANTLY..

hes sees how those players are player now and not knowing what the GM and ast GM knew when they made the moves..i agree with the moves.

With all of their DL signings, draftees, moves etc you'd have thought spine would be a strength.

Mccoy- injured before season
Poe- average at best
Griffen- given us nothing
Randy- still suspended
Smith- beast
Anae- plays like a mid round rookie
Gallimore- underwhelming
Woods- resigned out of need and has done better than most of the new guys except smith

That's what we have added so far
