Free Agency is Overrated

Most of the free agents being signed are over hyped, over rated, and over paid. They all have flaws in their game but are getting paid like they are elite.

Take a look at Wallace for example. If I’m giving a WR 60 mill, he better be able to run every route, make every catch and have the heart, passion and will to win. Wallace doesn't even possess half those traits. He is a one trick pony and a solid number 2 WR.

Another example is Kruger. If I’m handing out 8 mill a year I expect my OLB to not only be on the field every play but make an impact. This guy is a liability against the run and has not proven to be anything other than a complimentary pass rusher.

This list goes on and on and on..

Spencer is light years better than these free agents. Spencer is a very well rounded player. He plays the run extremely well, proved this year that he can generate a decent pass rush, and step up when he is being counted on (when all the other LBs were injured he took charge of the front 7 and stepped up his game). To me, we got the best free agent out there and we didn't have to get into a bidding war.

Although I’m not happy about the financial situation that we are in, I am happy about the inactivity during the early stages of free agency.

Honestly said, I think some of these teams are basically just chasing their own tail in FA.

By that I mean they are cutting 3-4 players to sign another 3-4 roughly equivalent players.

Not all the teams mind you, but I think quite a few of them.

And if WE signed any of these guys, I'm pretty sure you'd be saying the exact opposite. Another team signs them = they're overpaid vs. we sign them = good deal. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

hear, hear.

very few of these guys are the haley/deion/reggie white types who put a good team over the top.

most of them, you're paying above market rates for players whose best football is behind them.

it's like buying a used car. that 88 corvette was cool in the day, but is it worth as much as a new camaro? probably not.

Recent history says the OP is correct. The vast majority of "big fish" in free agency get way overpaid and many or most don't even finish their contract before getting released.

Green Bay, for example, almost always lays low in FA thses days. Maybe a playerhear or there.

I'm not at all saying it wouldn't be nice to have some of those players. It's not my money. But the cap implications usually end up hurting the team that grabbed them.

A few recent examples
Dunta Robinson, 6years/ 57 mil (already cut)
Albert Haynesworth, 7/100, (long gone)
Bart Scott, 6/48 mil (cut)
Dawan Landry, 5/27.5 (cut)
Eric Winston, 4/22 mil (cut)
Nnamdi Asomugha, 5/60, (cut)

The list keeps going. In fact, it is the norm.

I'm hoping Carr ends up being one of the exeptions for us.

Whenever you sign a player on the first day you have to outbid every other team to sign them. This is just the nature of the beast. A team that loads up on day one free agents is not a team that is going to use their cap space efficiently.

This is part of the reason I think the team was absolutely correct to tag Spencer. It makes infinitely more sense to negotiate with a player whose on the hook for the tag rather then try to outbid the rest of the league.

Paying 50MM for a #2 corner wasn't a good idea?

Here we go. Get him Risen.

I don't think free agency should be used to build a team. It should only be used for depth or to fill holes. There is just not much value to be had. A ten million dollar CB is not a good deal, I don't care how you look at it. Dallas has to depend on it too much due to poor drafts.

Or maybe seen the light?

This is where I am. I used to think free agency was a big deal, but now, not so much. And it isn't just because the Cowboys aren't active this season. Like jnday said, I think free agency is good if you need to add one or two players to fill a hole or put a team over the top, but I don't think building the bulk of your team through free agency and giving out enormous contracts is the way to go. I'd rather use the draft.

I'd rather use the draft too. Tough to do when you can't draft and only have six picks.

I actually think FA is more valued than in the past with the ability to roll over cap each year... There is a lot more quality player movement and some teams are getting a lot of short-term bargain starters so if they miss it doesn't hurt that much.

I'll be the first to admit that we overpaid in FA for Carr, heck Jerry even told you so with his "we paid retail" comment.

We kinda had to though with Newman being a goner and Jenkins being a huge question mark.

I don't think people would be all that upset if the deal on draft day didn't happen with STL though.

It was a costly move but how many chances in the draft do you ever get to select the best defensive player rated on your board?
