Free Agent ideas to help fix the team

So, I think we are heading in the right direction with Parker as DC. However, a lot more work needs to be done. Obviously, we need to purge Kenneth Murray and other dead weight.

However, I have some free agent ideas that can help fix the team. I think these additions can help go from worst to potentially dangerous on defence (as well as everything else). I should start by pointing out the following article from Landry Hat (https://thelandryhat.com/5-easy-moves-cowboys-can-make-to-free-up-94-million-in-cap-space). If we do what the article says, we can free up $94 mil. If we do that, I think the first moves should be to extend Pickens and Aubrey. Neither should cost too much. Then, we should probably sign Javonte Williams who wouldn't cost much either. So, with that, we probably would have about $65-70 mil (after signing these three). Let's say we have $65 mil remaining after this. Here are players I'd love to see us sign:

  • Rob Havenstein - he's apparently a FA. He would be a good and probably cheap one or two year option for RT to replace Steele. Havenstein would save us the need to go oline (again) in the draft. Thus, we can focus more draft resources to defence.
  • Alex Singleton - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Singleton_(linebacker)) he was in Denver for one of the two years (2022) when Parker was coaching there. As such, he's likely to know the way that Parker likes to play his defences. Also, lets be honest, we need all the help we can get at LB. If you look in the Wikipedia link under "Stats", he's got a fairly good track record.
  • Nakobe Dean - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakobe_Dean) he obviously would know Parker's system. We would have two linebackers that know the system. I'm aware of his injury history, however, when he's on the field, he's a damn good player. Him, Singleton, and an early drafted LB like Sonny Styles would give us a dynamic LB trio. Plus, one of the best ways to improve a team is to get players that know the system and can show younger players how to build a culture.
  • Jaelan Phillips - (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/year/2026/team/phi) Phillips was traded to Philly this year and is a FA. Fwiw, I expect the Eagles to extend him, but they are going to have cap space issues. I think Phillips would be a dangerous pass rush addition to our team.
  • Joshua Uche - https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/47655/joshua-uche in case Phillips gets extended by Philly, I would have no issues with us getting Uche. He's young and cheap. He knows Parker's system.
  • Reed Blankenship - https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/77509/reed-blankenship Parker's specialty is secondary. We don't have much at safety. Blankenship is instantly (even with his "down" year last year) an improvement at safety for us. He's actually younger than I was expecting with him going to be 28 when next season starts. He also stated how Parker made him the pro he is. So, this would be a fairly easy signing.
  • P.J. Locke - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._J._Locke why not double dip at safety? He was also in Denver while Parker was there. Him and Blankenship at safety would instantaneously give us a better safety cord. All of a sudden, our primary DBs would be Blank, Blankenship, Locke, and Revel. That is a MUCH better secondary than what we had the last few years (plus, we might be able to resign Wilson for cheap if needed).
  • Sheldon Rankins - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheldon_Rankins for the "coup de gras" you might say, I'd get Rankins for a one or two year deal. Pair him with his old teammate Quinnen Williams (along with Osa and Clark). You get a dline of Williams, Clark, Osa, and Rankins, and you have yourself a lethal dline.
With potentially $65 mil (or less if we bring back Wilson for cheap), if we can get Rankins, Singleton, Dean, Locke, and Blankenship, that would be a MASSIVE coup for our defence. And then getting Havenstein gives our offense a secure oline to boot. Then, use our early draft picks to go pass rush and LB (like Styles). If we do this, our defence should be a NIGHTMARE for opposing offenses. You're potentially talking about a top offense and Aubrey combined with a suddenly formidable and dangerous defence? You can fill in the blanks for where the team can go. There would still be work needed (especially to sustain the defence) but this would go a LONG way in improving the team. Plus, especially given how many defences the players have had to learn since 2023, it'd be smart to have at least 3-4 players from previous stops of Parker's so that the rest of the team knows what to expect. I think the moves listed probably put the Cowboys in a conversation to be one of the deadliest teams going into 2026. With what the contenders from this season have shown about defences still winning championships, our defence would be MUCH better.

Bear in mind, we probably only need them to be average, but I think these FAs and some good draft picks might be enough to make our defence almost untouchable. Think what this team can do with a defence like that feeding Dak the ball in shorter fields? Remember how Bland was able to be a pick-6 magnet under Quinn? The players I've mentioned for defence would probably give Bland numerous opportunities to get back to being a pick-6 magnet. Not to mention what that would do for Revel.

I won't even name names here firstly but positional wise I would like adding an impact edge rusher and better than Chuma Edoga left tackle to really help this team.

Those are my first wishes on the break the budget offseason.
Then I'd resign Pickens, Javonte and Clowney to credible, not back breaking, short term deals.
Hoffman and Bass as well.

All the rest is draft for me. And pretty much all defense.

The discussion about this front office actually doing all the cap maneuvering needed to accomplish all of this would really shock me based off their past budgetary philosophy.

Should be a fun offseason.

A-Rod? I think we're good at QB
Our biggest issue is QB.

A-Rod would fix this in a sec. Even in his age he is so far better than the rubbish we trying to sell as an NFL level player.

But i know this is never going to happen. I just had to throw that in once in a while so nobody forgets over all that defense talk these days.

A good defense will carry the crap at QB into the playoffs. And there the crap ends (it).

 damn I see why people say what they say about our fanbase. Wanting Aaron Rodger’s in 2026 is flat out embarrassing. Getting rid of Dak for personal reasons ok I get that part but for Rodgers? And then with this defense? Damn.

If we don't upgrade the safety position I don't know how I can watch this team again. We have consistently had one of the worst safety groups of the entire NFL and season after season we do nothing to improve it. We are hamstringing the defenses by basically making them play with only 9 players out there.

Honestly, I thought Dak played very well last year. Fwiw, he was one of the few reasons we had a chance last year. Also, A Rod looked like crap with the Steelers.

I think with the defence I'm suggesting, we should be able to have a really good team. Plus, if worst comes to worst, we could draft a QB next year.

Imo, that's where Blankenship and Locke come in. Those two as a duo (and maybe Wilson and a draft pick) would instantly make our safeties better.

I hear ya.
Switching it up to Houston, where your last point could never have been more accurate.

I mean, MAN, did Stroud ever screw that up for those defensive guys.
Watching Stroud in this year's playoffs at QB was like watching Murray play linebacker all year.

And that's saying something.

Hoffman and Bass as well. Totally agree with you

Houston would be smart to sign Rodgers for a year while finding their next QB.
