Free antivirus ?

This is a free ONLINE scan

I think you just have to download a small file but the rest is done over the net and when you are done you are done.

I have used this before when I thought my own virus scan program may have missed something but did not want to load another new virus scanner.

I second avast and AVG, myself I use AVG as it doesn't use up as many resources but otherwise I have nothing against avast.

Also reccomend www.f-secure.com/blacklight as it scans for Rootkits, which sadly anti-virus companies are stuggling with. Lastly, Sysinternals has several security products (Mark Russinovich was the guy who uncovered Sony's rootkit last Fall). Mark also has a rootkit revealor which is great, but is anything but user-friendly.

AD-Adware Personal SE works good.

kinda 2 different things.

i run *both* AVG (grisoft.com - btw) and MS defender beta. i'd not rely on just one *or* the other but make it a team effort. both in place and while i don't normally hits sites that are notorious for this ('free porn', hacker sites) nothing has ever gotten through that i know of.

Since I am required to "sell" AV on my job I am partial to Norton.......

They might lock up some of the lower end computers but no computer can match thier definition file.......I admit though, it is way complicated for the average user but I'll never trade ease of use for quality.......

Viruses aren't even a huge threat anymore.....there's no money in killing C's......the money is in KeyLogging.....

I advise Webroot spysweeper........it's light years ahead of Ad-aware, spybot, ewido, pestpatrol, and all McAfee products.:)

AVG hasn't worked for me that great. If you want to go with it go with it. I use Avast. The home edition is free, you have to register at their website for a key, they e-mail it to you. NO you don't get signed up for any spam lists.

I agree Avast is one of the best on the market.

Very untrue, case in point a Mac user with a fully-patched machine dared hackers to get into his box, it took all of 30 minutes for one to succeed.

Mac just issued 26 patches, lesson in this - no such thing as an unhackable box (In the link above the hacker used a vulnerability that wasn't known nor was a patch available). However Macs/Linux have a lower number of users than Windows and Linux makes you use a limited account (Not sure if Macs do the same). By default Windows has "Everyone is an admin, do whatever you want to the box" setting, here's hoping this is corrected in Vista.
