Roy Williams: Wants to be a Lion, but not opposed to playing with T.O.
FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES • April 8, 2008
Receiver Roy Williams once again has reiterated he wants to stay a Detroit Lion, but is unsure if the team will pay him.
Speaking at his alma mater Texas to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram over the weekend, Williams said, "Of course I want to stay in Detroit. Everybody wants to stay with the team that drafted them. They are telling me I am going to be a Lion for at least one more season. That’s what I have on my mind."
The Star-Telegram quoted an anonymous source close to Williams that said the Lion wants play for the Cowboys if he wasn’t in Detroit.
When asked if he would like to play for the Cowboys, Williams said, "Man you know I can’t answer that question."
Williams is in the final year of his contract and the Lions have yet to approach him about an extension. They could franchise tag him and guarantee him a one-year big payday in 2009.
"Could they pay me? Yes," Williams said. "Will they pay me? That’s the question that needs to be answered. If I get franchised, I get franchised. If they want to go in another direction that is part of the business."
The Cowboys are in search of a veteran receiver. And Williams’ uncertain status makes him a prime target for a possible draft-day trade.
"I have thought about all of that," Williams said. "I just do what I do. I am getting prepared for the season. ... If things don’t work out, I wouldn’t mind playing anywhere. ... It’s a little disappointing. That’s the nature of this business. Whatever they do with me, they do with me."
Lions coach Rod Marinelli told the Detroit Free Press recently the Lions won't trade Williams.
“I’ll say it again," Marinelli said, "he’s not going anywhere. No. There’s no way. Like I’ve said, I want to see those two big trees (Williams and Calvin Johnson) playing together."
Williams grew up in Texas and was a Cowboys fan. He said he would have no problem playing with Owens or namesake safety Roy Williams.
"I could see myself playing with anybody," Williams told the Fort Worth paper. "Everybody talks about T.O. All T.O. wants to do is win. If he don’t get any balls and you win, you won’t hear nothing from him. But if you don’t win, you are going to hear from him but that goes with any big-time receiver. You want to help your team win. If you don’t, you are going to be (upset). And with Roy, at least I don’t have to worry about that hit. They have a good football team."
Williams told the Free Press on March 25: "If they want to make me a Lion for life, I'm good with that. If not, I'm just going to play my type of ball and see what happens after that."

You are all way to trigger happy. I agree we need to trade Williams, but he was a #7 pick. If you use the draft day value chart (which they will be using) he would have been worth 1500 points as a "rookie prospect". He is now a valuable veteran (and should be valued slightly higher). Dallas would need to offer up BOTH first round picks, #22 and #28 (worth 780 and 660 respectively) to even be in the ballpark. That STILL falls short of his 1500 "draft-day, prospect value". Remember, we are giving up a proven top-10 pick for two low first round prospects. In all honest, we should be getting both first round picks and a fourth to make it a fair trade (based on the value chart). Plus, we owe him more in bonus that salary this year. Getting rid of Williams actually hurts our "cap crisis".

We also need to pressure the other teams QB's and start suffing the other teams RB's. Why would any GM with this roster not want to get your RB or OT in the first round then come back later in the round with another first and pick up Dan Connor then add more talent in the 2nd round and have 2 3rd rd picks also. That should be a draft you could get at least 3 starters in and maybe one or two Pro Bowlers. No one person is larger than the team as a whole. He is leaving next year and if the franchise tag is used he will be gone for sure without nothing in return. If your going to clean house and rebuild, do a complete job...for to long all we did under Millen is just add new coats of paint.

He has no trouble playing for another team ...good make the deal get as many picks as you can at least 1 first rounder and go from there. get the guy out of here Then fill the rest of the holes on our team. Williams doesn't come through when the pressure is on so what would be missing?

Well no *****. That is why the Lions should have traded him long ago. Where are all the idiots that were saying "it would be the biggest mistake". I don't think well miss his "Down by 40 first down celebrations".

I understand his sentiment, but honestly, does anyone actually think he wants to remain on a team with little chance of accomplishing anything except getting out of the cellar in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL?

If the cowboys are offering there two 1st round picks, you do the deal!!!! hey, roy is a great player no doubt... but the lions are not going anywhere, unless Stanton comes in and pulls a brett farve and its bombs away plus there are some decent players at wide receiver on the roster Mcdonald,Furrey both just as fast as Roy,Roy,Roy.. make this trade!!!!!
