When Great Britain was in a shambles and the USA was just a fledgling society, France was the pre-eminent military and economic power in the world for a couple of centuries. The British overtook them and ran with it until the late 19th or early 20th century when the USA took over.

It'll be interesting to see what happens towards the latter part of this century with the Chinese. America's advantage is immigration of the elite from around the world and it'll be interesting to see if that persists.
