Beginning in September, the surf can get very big out there. They rotate the US Surfing Championships usually in 3 spots: Hawaii, Southern Cal, and Cape Hatteras. The rest of the east Coast (and most of California) does not have good surf. The summers are fairly calm, but even then it can get good with any type of storm within several hundred miles offshore. They call it the wave magnet due to it's location offshore and from the shelf.
No doubt though, it's fairly flat (as is most of the US) in tourist season (June-August).
