A very quick mock for Friday. Yes, I still have my Virginia Tech homer pick in round 2!
1. David DeCastro, OG, Stanford: clear best pick for our needs at this position in the draft. Solidifies one of the guard positions for at least the next 10 years and would create a human forcefield next to Tyron Smith on the left side.
2. Jayron Hosley, CB/KR/PR, Virginia Tech: we need help at CB. Newman will most likely be released, and Jerome Henderson did some good work with Joe Haden in Cleveland, a player who Hosley reminds me of. Great ball skills, great hands, and also gives us a clear punt and kick returner to keep our impact skill position players' mileage down.
3. Shea McClellin, DE/OLB, Boise State: Anthony Spencer walks in free agency, and Victor Butler becomes the de facto starter. McClellin can come in and challenge Butler for playing time at the OLB position, and maybe usurp him. Guy has a motor like JJ Watt and excelled in a small program, with 6 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.
4. Kheeston Randall, DT, Texas: 6'5", 295 lbs of grown man. Randall struggled this year, but who on Texas didn't? The entire defense was an abomination and Randall would excel with the rest of the unit in Dallas surrounding him. Moves Ratliff to DE where everyone has been clamoring for, and splits reps with Brent.
5. Rhett Ellison, TE, USC: Southern Cal just produces NFL talent. We'll need a TE, as Martellus Bennett is about 95% not returning this year. Good developmental player with good receiving and blocking skills. Will do well learning from Jason Witten.
6. Chandler Harnish, QB, Northern Ill.: a solid player with good mechanics and some legs. Harnish is very similar to Romo in his scrambling ability. He should be further along in passing development than Stephen McGee, who was primarily an option QB at Texas A&M.
6. (Comp) Chris Rainey, UTIL, Florida: Florida's "do it all" back/receiver, Chris Rainey can come in pretty much as only a KR/PR if we decide to maintain our stable of RBs at Murray, Jones, and Morris/Tanner (huge Tanner fan here). He's fast, small, and shifty, kind of like Sproles. Florida's football program is in the SEC cellar, but they still have athletes at the skill positions.
7. Kaniela Tuipulotu, DE, Hawai'i: 6'2", 300 lbs, and will likely get bigger and stronger in the NFL. Call me whatever you want, but I think that Polynesian guys can just flat out play football due to their natural strength and stamina. As long as he's coachable and has a reasonable amount of football talent, he could be a solid grab.
Undrafted Free Agents
Gary Gray, CB, Notre Dame
Darius Nall, OLB, Central Florida
Bryan Anger, P, California
Anthony Miller, TE, California
George Iloka, S, Boise State
