Stunning loss to Appalachian State dooms Wolverines; USC still No. 1

Michigan’s stunning 34-32 loss to Appalachian State sent it plummeting out of the polls.
Ranked fifth in the preseason, the Wolverines (0-1) dropped out of the top 25 in the latest USA Today coaches’ poll released Tuesday.
Southern California (1-0) remained atop the rankings, receiving 49 of 60 first-place votes after opening the season with a 38-10 victory over Idaho.
The top three remained unchanged as No. 2 Louisiana State (1-0) received four first-place votes and No. 3 Florida (1-0) collected the remaining seven. West Virginia (1-0) and Wisconsin (1-0) each climbed two spots to complete the top five.
Florida State (0-1), ranked 19th in the preseason, also fell out of the top 25 after a 24-18 loss to Clemson.
The week’s other big loser was Tennessee (0-1), which slipped nine spots to No. 24 following a 45-31 loss to California (1-0), which climbed two spots to No. 10.
Two teams entered the poll after being unranked in the preseason - No. 21 Georgia Tech (1-0), which routed Notre Dame, 33-3, and No. 25 Boston College (1-0), which posted a 38-28 victory over reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champion Wake Forest.
Oklahoma (1-0) is sixth, followed by Texas (1-0), Louisville (1-0), Virginia Tech (1-0) and California.
Ohio State (1-0), which opened the post-Troy Smith era with a 38-6 win over Youngstown State, starts the second 10 and is followed by Georgia (1-0), Auburn (1-0), UCLA (1-0), Penn State (1-0), Rutgers (1-0), Nebraska (1-0), Arkansas (1-0), Texas Christian (1-0) and Boise State (1-0).
Georgia Tech, Hawaii (1-0), Texas A&M (1-0), Tennessee and Boston College complete the poll.
