From 5th to gone! Michigan out of coaches' poll

Stunning loss to Appalachian State dooms Wolverines; USC still No. 1

Michigan entered the season ranked fifth in the coaches' poll, but now is unranked.

Michigan’s stunning 34-32 loss to Appalachian State sent it plummeting out of the polls.

Ranked fifth in the preseason, the Wolverines (0-1) dropped out of the top 25 in the latest USA Today coaches’ poll released Tuesday.

Southern California (1-0) remained atop the rankings, receiving 49 of 60 first-place votes after opening the season with a 38-10 victory over Idaho.

The top three remained unchanged as No. 2 Louisiana State (1-0) received four first-place votes and No. 3 Florida (1-0) collected the remaining seven. West Virginia (1-0) and Wisconsin (1-0) each climbed two spots to complete the top five.

Florida State (0-1), ranked 19th in the preseason, also fell out of the top 25 after a 24-18 loss to Clemson.

The week’s other big loser was Tennessee (0-1), which slipped nine spots to No. 24 following a 45-31 loss to California (1-0), which climbed two spots to No. 10.

Two teams entered the poll after being unranked in the preseason - No. 21 Georgia Tech (1-0), which routed Notre Dame, 33-3, and No. 25 Boston College (1-0), which posted a 38-28 victory over reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champion Wake Forest.

Oklahoma (1-0) is sixth, followed by Texas (1-0), Louisville (1-0), Virginia Tech (1-0) and California.

Ohio State (1-0), which opened the post-Troy Smith era with a 38-6 win over Youngstown State, starts the second 10 and is followed by Georgia (1-0), Auburn (1-0), UCLA (1-0), Penn State (1-0), Rutgers (1-0), Nebraska (1-0), Arkansas (1-0), Texas Christian (1-0) and Boise State (1-0).

Georgia Tech, Hawaii (1-0), Texas A&M (1-0), Tennessee and Boston College complete the poll.

Good... those polls would have lost all credibility if Michigan had stayed in the top 25.

Also good that the voters paid attention and moved Texas below Oklahoma... although that ranking doesn't matter much as they'll settle it on the field.

They had any credibility left???

Only inasmuch as they're used to determine the national champion. But outside of that minor detail... no. :p:

There's a huge difference between relevance and credibility.

Someday, hopefully in my lifetime, there'll be a true champion crowned via a playoff.

Michigan looked a hell of a lot better losing than Texas did winning. The poll is a crock, what have the coaches seen, nothing but film of their next foe.

Still laughing from the loss on Saturday, but i'm sure they'll play with that much more fire when they play us at the end. They'll play the "we have nothing to lose" angle and we'll still spank them again this year.

talk about a knee jerk reaction. There may be 25 teams that can beat michigan the way they played on saturday, but there aren't 25 teams better than michigan.

well, last time i checked you can go to a bcs bowl winning 10 ugly games, but if you michigan fans want to loose in style, thats your perrogative. as for us, a win is a win, HOOK EM!!

But there is one 1-AA team that is better than michigan and that is all that counts at this point.

When you have something to happen like this you are not going to stay in the polls.

They still have a chance to work their way back into the poll but at this point they do not deserve to stay in the polls.

You think you are being cute as a football team by thinking you are scheduling a cup cake team for the first game in order to work out any kinks and figure it in as an easy win and WHAM they beat you. Then someone actually thinks they should not have fallen out of the top 25.:laugh2:

I wouldn't actually call the back to back 1-AA champions cup cakes. If you're gonna schedule a tune up/blowout take Duke and their 20 game losing streak (oh wait 21 they got blown up by my Huskies) but don't play anyone who has recently had the title of champion:banghead:

I've been a Texas fan since '69 and I'm embarrassed that we needed the refs to cheat for us to preserve a win against Arkie State.

And to show what an absolute joke the coach's poll is, Duke got a preseason top 25 vote.

Of course it was from the Ol' Ball Coach who does it every year but still. At least he fills out his own ballot. At most schools, the SID looks at last week's poll and moves anyone who lost down. Coaches don't have the time to watch other teams unless they're a future opponent or playing a future opponent.

Haha - sorry. I am w/ Jimmy on this.

If my Sooners stunk it up. I'd call a duck a duck and say they looked rediculous. Even if they escaped by 7 or 10.

You want to show in the College ranks. In the past if a team does not show well on Saturday ...it can hurt them in the end.

So what you say...a win is not always a win. Not in the college ranks.

The refs today actually said they did blow that onsides kick call.

Ark St. had the correct men on the field.

Bummer - You got Ducked Jimmy.

That may or may not be true. If it is, they can start proving it this week by beating Oregon. But after laying an egg like they did last weekend, they're going to have to show something before getting any more benefit of the doubt.
